Built in 1860, the Exchange Hotel with its high ceiling parlors and grand veranda welcomed passengers from the two rail lines: the Virginia Central Railroad and the Orange & Alexandria Railroad. Soon after the completion of the hotel, the War Between the States began. Troops, supplies, and wounded were transported on these railroads to Gordonsville. The Exchange Hotel became the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital which provided care for 70,000 soldiers, both Confederate and Union. In the reconstruction period, this hospital served the newly freed slaves as a Freedman's Bureau Hospital. As the United States healed and the railroads boomed, this graceful building returned to its role of hotel. Now fully restored, the hotel is a museum dedicated to and houses an extensive collection of medical and historical artifacts.

BUT IS IT HAUNTED?

It is said that the last patient to leave the Exchange was a Union Corporal from Pennsylvania.

Well....not exactly.

Today, visitors view Gordonsville's history through medical, military, town, and hotel exhibits. On occaison, they may experience something that's not part of the regular exhibit. Such as, apparitions and strange sounds. Paranormal activity at the Exhange has been well documented. Reports from former staff members include stories of employees who refused to stay in the building after dark and who wouldn't go into the summer kitchen at all! Current and former employees, and visitors have reported experiencing hearing doors opening and closing, disembodied voices, apparitions of a little girl named "Emma", soldiers, nurses, and doctors! In fact, the Exchange Hotel is considered one of the top ten most haunted locations in Virgina.
