Flint Knapping Class

Ryan Sanders is a traditional and contemporary flintknapping artist whose passion for the art comes from his deep connection to the outdoors. His passion and love for the art come from days and nights walking along rivers, creeks, and lakebanks, searching for artifacts, tools, and stones that inspire his work. These experiences have helped him better understand the challenges, techniques, and processes used by those who made the tools necessary for flint knapping.

At 30 years old, Ryan has practiced flintknapping for approximately 10 years. He was self-taught for his first three years before beginning to learn under the guidance of Cherokee National Treasure Vyrl Keeter, one of the finest flintknappers and teachers.

In this hands-on class, Ryan will share the knowledge and techniques passed down to him by his mentor. Participants will learn about selecting quality rock, the spalling phase, reduction phase, and notching phase. Each phase requires its own techniques and careful process to shape and create the tool you desire.
