First Amendment 101: Peaceful Protest

Learn from Your NeighborsThe news landscape is increasingly fragmented, with information often confined to isolated silos. This lack of shared understanding creates fertile ground for misinformation to spread, further deepening divisions in relationships and society.To help address this, we’re offering monthly forums where we can learn from people with lived experience and experts on complex topics. We’ll then discuss these issues in a relaxed and welcoming setting, where we’ll share food and drink and participate in respectful discussions. We can also raise money for related non-profit organizations while we’re at it.We meet at 5:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.There is no charge, though we encourage you to support our host location by buying food and drinks.5:30 – 6:00: Purchase a drink and get to know each other6:00 – 7:00: Discussion/Presentation/Q&A7:00 – 7:30: Informal Conversation

At this Make Good Trouble Reno meeting, we’re focusing on one of the most powerful tools we have: the First Amendment.

The First Amendment protects five essential freedoms that shape American democracy. But what do those rights look like in practice, especially when people gather to protest?Join us for an informative and timely conversation about the right to assemble and peaceful protest. We’ll explore the constitutional foundations of protest, look at historic and current examples of Americans speaking out, and share practical tips for participating safely and effectively.The evening will cover:<ul><li>The five freedoms protected by the First Amendment</li><li>Historic moments when Americans exercised the right to assemble</li><li>Current protest movements and what they’re advocating for</li><li>Practical guidance on participating in protests, including the role of protest marshals and important do’s and don’ts</li></ul>Whether you’re new to civic engagement or already active in your community, this session will help you better understand your rights and how to exercise them responsibly.We’ll also share information about the upcoming <a href="https://www.mobilize.us/nokings/event/901160/" title="https://www.mobilize.us/nokings/event/901160/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">No Kings 3.0 protest on March 28</a> and ways you can get involved.<h3>Speakers</h3>Farrell Vaughn is a retired U.S. History and AP Government teacher who taught in the Washoe County School District, UNR, and TMCC. He has coached and judged the We the People civics program and currently serves as Lead Marshal for protests organized by Indivisible Northern Nevada (INNV).Eric Lerude is a retired attorney and co-founder of Make Good Trouble Reno. He has been actively involved in local protest efforts and serves as a marshal at INNV demonstrations.Join us for an engaging evening of learning, conversation, and community.
