Cylburn Arboretum Friends is the 501(c)3 non-profit friends group of Baltimore City's Cylburn Arboretum, enriching and enhancing the arboretum and our community  in a variety of ways, and providing nature education programs for people of all ages.

We are very lucky to be joined again by Dr. Abner Lall for an educational talk and walk through Cylburn’s grounds to explore the magic of fireflies. For the last five years Dr. Lall has been leading firefly walks at Cylburn.
Learn how fireflies use their bioluminescence to communicate with each other and observe them at twilight in Cylburn's gardens. Dr. Lall will discuss how disturbances like light pollution threaten the existence of fireflies and will suggest ways for us to help save them.
Dr. Lall is Professor, emeritus of biology at Howard University (1988 till 2011) where his research over the last 30 years has been on the vision in fireflies. Among different species of fireflies the colors of bioluminescence varies from lime-green to shades of yellow and amber. Dr. Lall's research has asked the question whether fireflies see the color of their flash. The flash communication system is utilized for mating. He began his investigation of vision and bioluminescence at Johns Hopkins University in the eighties (1979-88) as a research scientist.  In his retirement, he is the visiting scholar at JHU, Department of Biophysics, Homewood Campus.
