Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trailis a 501(c)(3) nonprofit  'Environmental and Horticultural Learning Center' encompassing one hundred and fifty-five acres of forest, fields, and wetlands straddling the town line separating Walpole, NH, from Alstead, NH. Distant Hill is made up of two adjoining properties: Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole, and Distant Hill Nature Trail which is mostly in the town of Alstead.Distant Hill Gardensis open to the public on the third weekend of May, the first and third full weekends June through September, the first full weekend of October, and for numerous educational workshops, talks, and special events throughout the year. We also offer guided tours for groups of an size by appointment, and self-guided tours by appointment or chance.Distant Hill Nature Trailis a two-mile-long wheelchair and stroller accessible gravel trail just east of Distant Hill Gardens. It is open daily, dusk-to-dawn, free of charge. <h3> A FOCUS ON THE NATIVE FERNS OF DISTANT HILL</h3>Join fern fanatics Michael Nerrie and Nate Marchessault for this workshop on fern identification. The one hundred and fifty-five acres of forest, fields, and wetlands of <a href="https://www.distanthill.org" title="https://www.distanthill.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Distant Hill Gardens and Nature Trail </a>contain over two dozen species of native ferns.The workshop will include a presentation with a collection of live specimens, followed by a short walk to practice your newly learned skills. This program is a follow-up to the Evergreen and Tardy Fern Workshop held in fall 2025, but you do not need to have attended that event to participate. This time, we will explore the full range of fern species that grow in our region.You'll learn how to identify each fern by their unique characteristics. Get up close and personal with these fascinating plants, as we explore their habitats and observe their intricate structures.Whether you're a seasoned botanist or simply curious about the natural world, this event is a fantastic opportunity to deepen your understanding and appreciation for ferns!<h4>Space is Limited - Registration is required</h4>
