<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">What is DATATHON?</H2>
To facilitate the use of Open Agriculture and Nutrition Datasets in agricultural research and development, IFPRI's <A HREF="http://gcan.ifpri.info/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">GCAN Project</A> is working hard to make household-level data more approachable and interoperable. At this Feed the Future DATATHON event, the GCAN Project Team will showcase findings from the harmonized data in Bangladesh across four key food security-relevant domains (climate, agriculture, nutrition, and gender) and invite avid data analysts and visualization specialists to generate their own analyses, infographics, and new insights.
<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">What are the Topics?</H2>
Together, using the harmonized dataset for Bangladesh, we will look into following three topics:

Are there any historical trends of climate shocks and their impacts on the livelihoods of female farmers and their empowerment in agriculture?

Is there any spatial representation and historical dynamics of gender inequality in agriculture?

What are the relationships between women’s empowerment in agriculture and nutritional outcomes?
</LI>

<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">Who Should Participate?</H2>
It'd be super if you have some background understanding of statistical analysis and how to use any data analysis tools, but we will welcome anyone who's interested in analyzing data and finding new insights, at any level of data analysis skills. If you're a student or a junior researcher, you'll learn from IFPRI's researchers on how you can harmonize datasets from multiple disciplinaries and generate new insights. You can also learn how to use data analysis and visualization tools to help you analyze the data. If you're a development practitioner, you'll have a great opportunity to network with researchers and development professionals and broaden your understanding of what open datasets are already available and how they may help your work. In any case, you'll have fun!
<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">What To Bring?</H2>
Participants are expected to bring own laptop and any data analysis software you feel comfortable using to analyze dataset and visualize the analysis, including Excel. For the building entrance, also don't forget to bring your government-issued photo ID!
<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">Can I Present Something I'm Working on?</H2>
Yes! During the event, we will invite anyone in the room to give a 3-minute mini-presentation while participants are working on their own analysis and visualizations. The presentation can showcase any data-related topics, such as a new study finding, new project, new datasets, new tools, or pitching new ideas.
<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">Can I Participate Remotely?</H2>
Yes! Please order your ticket for the [Remote Participation] and we will send you the connection information. We will try to accommodate the remote participants as much as we can.
<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">What Will Be Provided?</H2>
The harmonized dataset, in both Excel and STATA formats, will be provided in to the registered participants during the registration. A 14-day trial version of <A HREF="https://www.tableau.com/products/trial" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tableau Desktop</A> will be also provided (or you can go ahead and <A HREF="https://www.tableau.com/products/trial" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">download/install this in advance</A>), if you'd like to try out the data visualization tool. Remote participants will received a link to Dropbox folder to download these files. We will also provide lunch at noon and supply plenty of caffeine (coffee and tea) and refreshments throughout the event.
<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">Wait, Is It a Competition?</H2>
Yes! At the end of event, we will ask audiences to summarize (or visualize) their findings in one-slide and present. From the submissions, we will select three analyses - Best Presentation, Best Insight, and Best Visualization - and award prizes (each will receive a $100 Gift Card to use at <A HREF="http://kramers.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Kramerbooks &amp; Afterwords Cafe</A>). Plus, the awardees will be given a chance to present their analyses at a special Brown Bag Seminar to the USAID Feed the Future team!
<H2 CLASS="MsoIntenseQuote">What Will be the Selection Criteria for the Awards?</H2>
We will look for the ones best utilized the harmonized datasets across domains (climate, agriculture, nutrition, and especially gender). We won't be so much interested in ones only looking at one specific dimension.
