AbstractCompliance and Risk Management meet Governance at a Bar: A case study

Compliance and information systems risk management are a day-to-day reality that affect organizations worldwide. Organizations must find creative ways to address their specific requirements to maintain acceptable levels of information systems risk while at the same time achieving regulatory compliance. How does then an organization keep the barbarians at the gate (namely information system risks like malware, hacking, phishing, etc.) while at the same time comply with the rules governing their operations? (e.g. Sarbanes-Oxley, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act - HIPAA, United States Drug Enforcement Administration Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances - DEA-EPCS, Payment Card Industry – Data Security Standard PCI-DSS). Information systems risk and compliance resource allocation conflicts might arise and how organizations respond. The presentation discusses a case study of a Children’s hospital implementing a Multi-factor authentication solution within the context of a DEA-EPCS project and how they tackle issues that are common to organizations, like siloed operations and duplication of effort on similar activities when addressing issues related to compliance and information systems risk management. The presentation concludes with insights that can be brought back to your organization to work on similar issues
