Feather Fan Workshop

The Institute for American Indian Studies preserves and educates through discovery and creativity the diverse traditions, vitality and knowledge of Native American cultures. Located on 15 acres of woodland IAIS is home to permanent and temporary exhibits, nature trails, a replicated 16th century ReplicatedAlgonkianvillage. During the school year over 7,000 school age children visit for hands on programs to learn about the Indigenous people who have called Connecticut home for thousands of years.

Make your own feather fan in the comfort of your own home.

<p>Join IAIS Education Coordinator Darlene Kascak, from the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, for an online workshop where the participants will make their own Feather Fan. You will also learn about how these prayer fans are an integral part of everyday Native life. Fans such as these represent a gift that can heal the heart and are often used as smudging fans to dispatch a prayer to the heavens drawing healing power from the sky. Those who sign up for this workshop will receive their kit in the mail and be given a link to follow along as Darlene teaches you how to construct your own Feather Smudging Fan.
