Professional development workshop on Topics Based on the 2020 NJSLS-CS Standards offered by FDU with funding from the NJDOE

This event is part of a state funded program for enhancing computer science education for all students in the state of New Jersey providing teachers with a competitive, prestigious educational experience that addresses NJSLS-CS paired with effective teaching through content, engagement and collaboration, with a focus on how to teach CS through methods of inquiry based hands-on learning. The fully integrated program will orient teachers to sophisticated tools and equipment and will assist teachers in bringing cutting edge CS into the classroom. Throughout the project we will collaborate with school districts to share resources and provide support to implement the 2020 NJSLSCS standards.

Participants will gain CS skills, based on creativity and design using curricular resources that incorporate small, affordable physical computing devices or microcontrollers (micro:bits, Arduinos, etc.). Participants will create lesson plans for appropriate grade bands, aligning curricula and instruction with the 2020 NJSLS-CS and Design Thinking.

For K-5: Learning CS using physical devices (such as micro:bits, Arduinos, etc.) and block-based coding in line with the 2020 NJSLS-CS and Design Thinking.

PD sessions will use a Projects-based, progressive approach with a maker philosophy at its core to provide a context for learning coding & CS concepts through the act of creating solutions to real-world problems, using unplugged activities, guided activities, self-directed independent projects, & assessments based on the NJ standards. PD sessions will also introduce resources for using grade-appropriate Python-based tools for graphical representations.

Each PD session will cover new projects and new resources, focusing on aligning with the 2020 NJSLS-CS and Design Thinking, and participants will create grade-appropriate lesson plans.

We will provide technical assistance to educators (& LEAs) to implement curriculum & infuse CS topics in diverse subject areas.

The event is organized by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the Florham Campus in collaboration with FDU's STEM Institute of Education.

The workshops will start in October 2022 and continue until March 2023. Two sessions will be held each month, according to the following schedule:

• October 4th and 18th, 2022

• November 1st and 15th, 2022

• December 6th and 20th, 2022

• February 7th and 21st, 2023

• March 7th and 21st, 2023
