We are changing up our format this year, shortening the workshops (and your day), and giving you more interactive opportunities. You are going to LOVE the next phase of FashionSpeak!
 
Detroit Garment Group will host its sixth annual FashionSpeak, Michigan’s largest conference for the fashion industry, presented by Taubman, on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, at the One Woodward building in Detroit. FashionSpeak brings together industry-renowned experts from many facets of the fashion world to share their knowledge and expertise with over 250 attendees including students and professionals through a variety of fashion-focused workshops during this one-day conference.
 
With this conference, Detroit Garment Group seeks to “Keep Michigan Talent in Michigan.” The invaluable support of experts in the fashion industry by way of sharing educational tools and resources with students and professionals alike brings this mission to life. Ultimately, FashionSpeak aims to bring people together with the shared intention of propelling the local industry. 
 
FashionSpeak attendees including but not limited to students, designers, photographers, bloggers, and fashion retailers will not only get to meet fashion industry leaders, but will get the opportunity to learn, network and participate in workshops to broaden their knowledge and improve their businesses. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided, and attendees can participate in a meet-and-greet with the keynote speaker. 
  
The event takes place at the historic and modern One Woodward building in downtown Detroit. DOORS OPEN AT 9 A.M. FIRST SPEAKER STARTS PROMPTLY AT 10 A.M.
 
All five workshops, Q&A with experts, continental breakfast and lunch is included in the ticket price. 
 
A meet and greet immediately follows the conference, offering our guests the opportunity to mingle with our experts and network with their fashion community. There is no charge for the meet and greet and is exclusive to FashionSpeak 2018 attendees.

<H2 CLASS="font_3">Keynote Speaker: PHOENIX MELLOW - Costume Designer and Stylist: <A TARGET="_blank" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Detroiters</A>, Mad Men, Black Panther, Stranger Things and more </H2>
• Learn how Phoenix took her dream of costume design from school to REAL work. • Phoenix will share how she got her own show at such a young age for Hollywood standards! • She will answer YOUR questions about costume design, styling, career paths and so much more!
<A HREF="https://www.phoenixmellow.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Phoenix Mellow</A> is a costume designer known for her work on Comedy Central's television show, Detroiters. She is a native east-coaster; a Delawarean that sewed and designed at a young age. She started her design education at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City as a Fashion Design major. She moved to Los Angeles to finish her education at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in the Costume Design for Film and TV program. Phoenix has developed her fundamental costume skills working alongside extremely influential designers and costume heavy shows such as Mad Men with Janie Bryant, Black Panther with Ruth Carter, Stranger Things with Kimberly Adams. Working on stylist projects, such as Katy Perry's Hey Hey Hey music video, Nylon Magazine, Aritizia, and Giuseppina Magazine, Phoenix is able to release her passion for high fashion and keep a fun edge to her work. Phoenix enjoys fashion illustration and continues to use sketching as outlet to express her work and creativity. As a designer, Phoenix is imaginative, energetic, and passionate. She fuses well with Directors and Producers to help build their ideas and her own onto the screen. Phoenix hopes to expand the appreciation for Costume Designers, by fabricating real and exciting characters that speak to all types of imaginations.

<A CLASS="profileLink" HREF="https://www.facebook.com/akichoklat?fref=mentions" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Aki Choklat</A> is an internationally-acclaimed leading fashion and footwear design professional with experience in all levels of the industry, from design to production. A Royal College of Art graduate, he is currently the Chair of the Fashion Accessories Design Department at College for Creative Studies, in Detroit. He is a published author of design books, with Footwear Design (Laurence King) and Menswear Trends (Bloomsbury) being the latest. His academic career includes visiting lecturer roles at various leading international fashion schools; and he is also an accomplished public speaker, from corporate presentations to numerous television appearances.

Laurie Tennent For more than 30 years, photographer Laurie Tennent has built the corporation Laurie Tennent Studio, combining her commercial and fine art photography. She is a graduate of the College for Creative Studies. Learning to run a business to support her art, Tennent has encountered a variety of experiences. Currently, she is building a business showcasing her botanical art in exhibitions that travel to Botanical Gardens nationwide.
Elizabeth Mays Elizabeth Mays is the CEO of MCS Multimedia formed in 2011, after inheriting Mays Printing, founded in 1946 by her late grandfather, J. Caulton Mays. Mays is a 3rd generation printer, entrepreneur and visionary, who works closely with entrepreneurs and executives by using branding, printing, graphics, web design and marketing tactics to overcome roadblocks to increase provability. Mays is president and co-founder of Entrepreneur & Executive Magazine and Chief Consultant of Valley Publishing.
Sara Searing Sara Searing spent the last decade working as a retail manager for H&M Clothing.  She completed her career at H&M as a District Recruiter in the metro Detroit-area. Previously, Sara was a district manager for Ford Motor Company in Boston and then in Manhattan. She received her Bachelors of Arts from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she met her husband. She currently resides in the suburbs of Michigan and splits her time between her three children, and Reversible Co., an online retail company that she started with her twin sister, Rebecca, in 2017.

At The Meijer Merch Search, preselected FashionSpeak attendees get the chance to pitch their fashion product(s) in front of a panel of Meijer buyers and executives for a chance to have that product sold at Meijer stores! It's an exciting opportunity for the pitchers, and a great way for attendees to learn how to succinctly and effectively pitch their products and brands. Meijer representatives will begin the Merch Search with great advice on what buyers look for in products, along with what to do and what not to do to get a buyer to respond to you and your product.
