Friday: Play Therapy Techniques for Working with Preteens and Teens

Intermediate| Play Therapy Skills and Methods

Be prepared for fun while learning play therapy strategies to help preteens and teens gain a sense of belonging and positive identity, increase self-esteem, build relationships, and learn to share power. In this exciting (and probably loud) workshop, the participants will get to experience a wide variety of fun activities that they can use with their preteen and teen clients. Our focus will be on new and creative strategies that play therapists can use to "hook" pre-adolescents and adolescents into engaging fully in the therapeutic process. Through these playful interventions, clients can gain a sense of belonging, develop positive identities, increase self-esteem, build meaningful relationships, gain personal power in positive ways, and practice appropriate expression of feelings, including anger. The strategies presented in this workshop can also be used to help improve communication, teach conflict resolution, and build connections between youth and their parents and other family members.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 3 play therapy techniques they can use to build relationships with pre-adolescent and adolescent clients.
  2. Describe 3 play therapy techniques they can use to explore the interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics of pre-adolescent and adolescent clients.
  3. Describe 3 play therapy techniques they can use to help pre-adolescent and adolescent clients gain insight into their interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics.
  4. Describe 3 play therapy techniques to help pre-adolescent and adolescent clients learn and practice new ways of communicating and interacting with others.

This workshop will provide an introduction to EMDR including its approach to treating trauma and theoretical basis. The EMDR protocol, the types of problems it can resolve, and how it is used with children will be discussed. How play therapy is utilized throughout EMDR will be explored and a case study will be presented so participants can better understand how the modality works. This is not an EMDR training course, but it will provide information in order to make appropriate referrals or to further explore this approach.

After the session, participants will be able to:

In this fun, experiential workshop, we will explore how to integrate the Integrative Developmental Model of supervision and the Adlerian concept of the Crucial Cs in your clinical supervision of play therapists. You will get to practice adapting your play therapy supervision interventions based on supervisee level of development and Crucial Cs.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how they can apply the 4 Crucial Cs from Adlerian psychology in their play therapy supervision.
  2. Describe how the 4 levels of the Integrative Developmental Model apply to play therapy supervision.

Introducing the Pawsome Human-Animal Connection in Play Therapy with Kamie Larson, LCSW-QS, Registered Play Therapist™, CAAPT

Animal Assisted Therapy is a growing and diverse discipline. This workshop will discuss the process to incorporate animals as play partners in therapy sessions; adding to the effectiveness of play therapy by engaging the natural abilities of animals to enhance the therapeutic powers of play. The workshop will explore various educational and professional credentials one can pursue to ensure the legitimacy of including animals in their play therapy practice. The workshop will educate participatants on the ethics, agency, and animal welfare considerations of animal assisted interventions. Participants will learn about the play therapist competencies needed to legimately include animals in play while building a triad of trust between animal, client, and play therapist. This workshop will explore choosing and training a play therapy animal, setting up an appropriate play space for animal assisted interventions, leading an animal assisted session, and general guiding principals for intentionally improving clients’ emotional and developmental health as a therapist/animal team. This workshop will include videotaped examples and case studies of animal assisted sessions. As a result of attending the workshop, participants will possess knowledge of how the human-animal connection can promote the field of play therapy.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explalin the ethical and animal/client welfare considerations for conducting animal assisted play therapy.
  2. Describe how to legimately move forward with animal assisted interventions in their play therapy practice.
  3. Identify the guiding principals to intentionally incorporate an animal in play therapy as a play partner.

Have you ever felt “stuck” in the play therapy room? In this session, participants will playfully explore the 20 therapeutic powers of play. Using the therapeutic powers of play, participants will create a foundation for designing, implementing, and documenting creative interventions with their clients in the play therapy session.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the therapeutic powers of play.
  2. Design 2-3 creative play therapy interventions/techniques.
  3. Describe the creative play therapy interventions/techniques in a progress note.

Playing at School: School-Based Play Therapy for Groups with Ann L. Tilman, Ed.D., School Based-Registered Play Therapist™

Foundational| Play Therapy Special Topics

School Counselors and other school-based professionals use a variety of approaches to work with students. Participants will learn more about how play therapy is approached in the school environment and explore group-based play therapy and experiential activities through a hands-on process.

After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify characteristics of school-based play therapy, including group play therapy.
  2. Explain to stakeholders how group play therapy can positively impact student success.
  3. Evaluate student needs and apply one of the play therapy experiential group interventions that is presented.

Cancellation Policy:

$50 is non-refundable. Written cancellations received 30 days or more prior to the start of the conference will receive a full refund of the balance minus $50. Cancellations less than 30 days prior to the start of the conference will forfeit the total cost of registration. Please note: refunds will not be provided after April 3, 2024.

In the very unlikely event that the workshop must be cancelled or postponed by the organizers, the Florida Association for Play Therapy will provide a full refund of the registration fees.

About our presenters...

Terry Kottman, PhD, LMHC, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ - developed Adlerian play therapy, an approach to working with children, families, and adults that combines the ideas and techniques of Individual Psychology and play therapy. She founded the League of Extraordinary Adlerian Play Therapists and created a certification program for Adlerian play therapy. Terry is a fun and engaging presenter and author who regularly teaches classes and writes about play therapy. She is co-author (with Kristin Meany-Walen) of Doing Play Therapy: From Building the Relationship to Facilitating Change and Partners in Play: An Adlerian Approach to Play Therapy, and the author of Play Therapy: Basics and Beyond and several other books. In 2014, she was granted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Play Therapy; in 2017, she was given a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Iowa Association for Play Therapy; and in 2020, she received a third Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Society for Adlerian Psychology. (She seems to be collecting them.) She has been married to her husband Rick for 46 years and has a delightful adult son, Jacob, of whom she is inordinately proud..

Roxanne Grobbel, JD, LCSW, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ - has focused her career on trauma treatment as a Certified EMDR Therapist, Consultant, and Trainer, as well as, an Infant Mental Health Specialist, and Registered Play Therapy Supervisor. She has developed and directed award-winning mental health programs for at-risk children and families and has authored several chapters on Play Therapy and EMDR. As an EMDRIA approved EMDR trainer she travels nationally providing workshops on Play Therapy and EMDR. She has been an active advocate for quality services for children and adults with trauma related disorders. Her agency, Coast to Coast EMDR (formally Insight Counseling Center) allows her and her staff to continue this work nationally.

Kevin B. Hull, PhD, LMHC, CGP, Registered Play Therapist™ - owns and operates Hull and Associates, P.A. a private practice in Lakeland, Florida. Dr. Hull is an RPT™ and licensed counselor who has worked with children and adolescents and their families on the Autism spectrum since 2001. Dr. Hull has been a professor for 20 years and is currently associate faculty with Liberty University. Dr. Hull specializes in using electronic devices in play therapy. He is currently conducting a year long study through the Florida DOC utilizing play therapy in the prison setting for complex trauma. Dr. Hull plays weekly through open water swimming and spending time with his wife Wendy and their four children.

Kamie Larson, LCSW-QS, Registered Play Therapist™, CAAPT - is the owner of Gulf Breeze Therapy in Gulf Breeze, Florida. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Qualified Supervisor in Florida. Kamie is also a Registered Play Therapist™ and Certified Animal Assisted Play Therapist®. Her clinical social work career spans three decades in a variety of agencies, schools, and locations with children, adolescents, and families. As a lover of people and animals, she has witnessed the healing power of play and connection across species. Therefore, she utilizes play therapy and Animal Assisted Play Therapy® in helping people connect, play, and thrive.

Carrie Longest, PhD, LMHC, NCC, ACS, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ - is the founder of Healing with Play, Inc in Wellington, FL. She brings 20 years of experience working with children and families in various settings. She is passionate about all things play therapy and incorporates play at every opportunity. Additionally, Carrie is dedicated to educating the next generation of play therapists.

Ann L. Tilman, Ed.D., School Based-Registered Play Therapist™ - has been an educator for more than twenty years as a classroom teacher, school counselor, and counselor educator. She earned her master’s in mental health counseling, completed all school counseling coursework, and then worked as a school counselor in Florida. During that time, she earned a graduate certificate in play therapy and her doctorate in counselor education and supervision and later became a counselor educator at Florida Gulf Coast University. Dr. Tilman is a certified school counselor in Florida, a School Based-Registered Play Therapist™ (SB-RPT™), and a certified AutPlay® provider. As a counselor educator, she has been recognized by her university with the Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (2020-2021) for teaching and the Team Service Excellence Award (2021-2022) for service relating to autism. She has taught group counseling courses since 2008, has developed and taught play therapy courses in two state universities, and works closely with the Association for Play Therapy to advocate for school counselors’ use of play.
