FANTASTICAL BACH

 Wednesday, September 19th, 2018, at 7 p.m.

Dr. Yelena Grinberg, speaker & pianist

Dear Friends,

Hope you all had a fun and fabulous summer!

On Wednesday, September 19th, 2018, at 7 p.m. I am delighted to invite you all for my Fall 2018 Season-opening salon - FANTASTICAL BACH - featuring all seven of Bach's (unjustly!) seldom-heard Toccatas, BWV 910-916 (ca. 1707-1714). The Toccata genre, from the Italian word toccare ("to touch"), originated as an improvisational warm-up that a keyboard player would go through when sitting down at the instrument, tossing off brilliant scales and arpeggios and showing off with a bit of improvisation, as well as including sections in thorny fugal style, which then gradually evolved into an actual written-out composition. Youthful Bach composed his seven brilliant Toccatas under the influence of Dietrich Buxtehude's so-called stilus phantasticus - a fantastic, adventurous and quirky musical style characterized by a very unrestrained way of composing, often using dramatic rhetorical gestures. Collectively, Bach's seven Toccatas represent some of his wildest and most extravagant works that reveal his unparalleled genius for fugal counterpoint, his gift for melodic lyricism, harmonic adventurousness, rhythmic ingenuity, dancelike vitality, brilliant virtuosity, emotional depth of expression, great wit and sense of humor. I will open my program with Bach's angst-filled Toccata in D minor, BWV 913, believed to be one of his earliest Toccatas, followed by his heart-wrenching and least well-known Toccata in F-sharp minor, BWV 910, his melancholy and oft-played Toccata in E minor, BWV 914, with its tempestuous final Fugue, his radiant Toccata in G Major, BWV 916, the most Italianate in style, resembling a three-movement Italian concerto form, his dark and stormy Toccata in C minor, BWV 911, the longest of the seven Toccatas that concludes with an exuberant Presto, his stirring - and my personal favorite! - Toccata in G minor, BWV 915, that includes an exciting opposition of forte and piano dynamics and a cyclic return of the fantastical opening gesture, and, for the festive finale, Bach's jubilant Toccata in D Major, BWV 913, which features some of his most truly bizarre and eccentric writing, full of dramatic flair and brilliant virtuosity throughout. This kaleidoscopic program of Bach's complete Toccatas is NOT to be missed!!!

I look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday, September 19th!

Best wishes,

Dr. Yelena Grinberg, founder and artistic director of the Grinberg Classical Salon Series
