About this event

  • 3 hours

Join Adam Zurn from Uncharted Lancaster at 9 a.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024, for a Water Week adventure. We will journey back in time on a guided history hike along the Northwest River Trail. Participants will explore a portion of the historic Pennsylvania Main Line Canal route between the Falmouth Boat Launch and Prescot Road and visit Lancaster Conservancy's Falmouth Forest Garden at Conoy Wetlands Nature Preserve in between.

For those looking to super-size their adventure and able to navigate unlevel terrain, we will explore (river levels permitting) the unique geologic features of the nearby 750,000 years ago Conewago Falls potholes afterward.

What to expect

Unlike the Tunnels of Enola adventure, this is considerably less strenuous. This relatively easy hike is approximately 3 miles round trip, excluding the (optional) Conewago Potholes excursion at the end. A majority of the hike is along a mostly level, paved terrain. We will leave the trail a few times to explore the canal and locks. This will involve uneven, possibly muddy ground.

Dress for the weather. There's a high possibility of wet feet as we explore the rock formations of the Conewago Potholes. Packing something to drink and a snack isn't a bad idea, either.

Will run rain or shine. Severe weather cancellations will be made on-site.

I will have some Uncharted Lancaster swag, such as stickers, magnets, lapel pins, and 3" patches for participants to choose from as souvenirs.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Lancaster Conservancy to support its mission of saving nature.

Lancaster Water Week

Lancaster Water Week celebrates the 1,400 miles of streams and rivers in Lancaster County. These waterways are the source of our drinking water, drive economic and agricultural growth, and allow us to escape into nature to fish, paddle, and swim. Unfortunately, more than half of these important streams and rivers are polluted. But we are taking action as a community to restore our waterways to health in our lifetime. The 8th annual Lancaster Water Week includes over 60 events from June 7-15, 2024, providing opportunities to learn, explore, and act to protect our waterways! Learn more: www.lancasterwaterweek.org.
