Fall Days of Service (FDS) Student FAQs

1. Who will I be engaging in service with?

You will be serving with other Boston University participants and a Service Leader. The size of your group is specified in the registration ticket, with one spot reserved for the Service Leader.

2. Are all service opportunities taking place on these dates?

Yes! Tickets are listed by date and time, subject to slight changes. Please expand the ticket type to learn more about each partner.

3. Can I volunteer as part of a group?

Absolutely! We encourage group participation; however, each group member must register individually.

4. How do I get to my in-person community partner?

Participants will receive, once registered, an email detailing where and when to meet their Service Leader and groups on the day of service and information about opportunity partner-specific transportation, which will be either by foot, van, or public transportation. The CSC will coordinate all transportation logistics, and volunteers do not need their own CharlieCards.

5. Will meals be provided?

Participants will not be provided with a meal from the Community Service Center. Students should arrange to eat other meals before or after service. You may bring your own sack lunch to your partner site if you wish. We recommend Rhetty-to-Go meals for students with a meal plan! Due to mask-wearing rules specific to each location, please consult your service leader or a partner site leader about the best place to take a drink/snack break.

6. What should I bring and wear for in-person service?

Bring your Terrier Card, a BU-approved mask, and water bottle. Wear a mask as well as comfortable clothing and shoes that you are willing to get dirty! Certain partner opportunities may have more specific requirements, or forms needed. If there are specific requirements, they will be sent to you in a confirmation email before the event.

7. I need help logging my hours.

If you need verification for volunteering hours performed for an outside commitment, you must contact the Community Service Center at cscpr@bu.edu prior to the event. The Community Service Center cannot provide verification without prior notification.

8. I am not available on the dates for the Fall Days of Service experiences. Are there other ways I can participate in FDS?

Yes, we have one more FDS weekend November 13-14. The Community Service Center also has a variety of academic-year programs for you to get involved with more regularly. To learn more about these programs, and to be updated when registration for the other FDS weekends comes out, sign up for the CSC newsletter here: https://www.bu.edu/csc/stay-in-the-loop/newsletter/

9. The Community Partner I wanted to go to has no volunteer spots left - what should I do?

You can add yourself to the waitlist for the service, or choose a different service opportunity. If you choose the waitlist option, you should not sign up for conflicting service. If you are taken off the waitlist, you will receive a confirmation email sometime before the event, with the option to sign up for the service. You must respond to this email within two hours of receiving it, or else we will have to offer someone else your spot.

10. What if I want to hold a leadership role within DOS?

Applications to be a civic engagement chair are closed now for the fall, but will be open again in the future! Check out https://www.bu.edu/csc/upcoming-events/dos/ for updates.

Our Mission

The Community Service Center (CSC) is Boston University's welcoming space for service, leadership, education, and reflection. In solidarity with our neighbors and community partners, we aim to: create opportunities for the Boston University community to address critical concerns of communities throughout Greater Boston; serve as a vehicle for personal growth and leadership; encourage students to be active citizens wherever they call home; broaden the scope of the educational experience through service and reflection; build mutually beneficial relationships with community members and community partners.

Our History

The Community Service Center (CSC), originally called “The League” was founded by a group of Boston University students in 1986. These students wanted to address the critical issues facing Boston and started several volunteer programs under the leadership of Marsh Chapel.

By 1989, The League had 17 different programs including FYSOP, The Youth Tutoring Program (now known as Afterschool), Alternative Spring Breaks and Student Food Rescue. Over the years, interest in volunteering continued to grow with programs like Alternative Winter Break and the AIDS Support and Advocacy Program (now known as Project Hope). The League was renamed The Community Service Center in 1991 and moved to its current location on the 4th floor of the George Sherman Union in 1998.

The Community Service Center remains committed to providing the Boston University Community with opportunities to engage in direct service, education, and reflection in Greater Boston and beyond.
