Event Details

DIGITAL NEST - FALL 2018

 

The Digital NEST Fall Program runs from early October through mid-December. We are excited to engage members in fields such as Content Creation, Web Development, Video Production, Video Game Development, Objected-Oriented Programing, Photography, Screenwriting, Acting, Music Production, Project Management, Event Coordination and much more!

 

Members will have the opportunity to work on projects, learn how to use industry software such as Adobe, and develop their technical and professional skills. Our trainings are taught by Digital NEST staff and professionals in the industry, allowing members to gain exposure and insight into careers that they may be interested in pursuing.

 

In addition to core trainings, we want to foster a community by offering field trips, activities, networking opportunities,  film screenings, health and wellness workshops, and much more!  There is something for everyone at the NEST. Join us this fall!

DIGITAL ARTS + TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS

DAT builds skills and experiences related to Graphic Design, Art, Video Production, Photography and Music Production. Gain insight and tools to become a multimedia specialist, while creating a portfolio to show potential employers and clients.

 

Acting for Film / TV

Ready to become a movie star? In this training we will learn the fundamentals of script analysis, character development, and on-camera acting through scene study, monologues, and a variety of exercises.

Dates: 10/3 - 12/13

Audio Visual Journalism

Make yourself into a news reporter, local historian, and storyteller for your community. Professional journalists and UC Santa Cruz students and professors will show you how to gather, write and produce grassroots radio and video news. Your work will be published online and broadcast to every home around the Monterey Bay. You can make a name (and a career) for yourself while serving the community. We’ll dive deep into electronic news gathering, digital publication, studio audio production, and FM and remote broadcasting and web streaming. We’ll also cover reporting ethics, interviewing, writing for diverse audiences, social research methods, and a crash course on local government and social issues. Along the way, we’ll explore career options and income opportunities in local media and nationally-distributed programs, too.

Screenwriters Lab

In this training we will learn the techniques of character-driven storytelling, focusing on the most in-demand skills for today’s screenwriters. At the end of the training members will have their 5-10 page scripts reviewed, and one will be selected for our annual summer production. This is a great opportunity for aspiring writers. Must be a high school junior, senior or up to the age of 24 to participate. This is a writing intensive training.

Post-Production Lab 

Members who worked on the summer short film, Service with a Smile, can work with the director and in-house postproduction team to edit, mix, and add the final VFX to the film for distribution. Must be a SWAS cast or crew member to apply.

Music Meetup

Join us in a fun interactive space where music lovers can come together to learn about music production, talk about the latest songs from the industry, and network with others interested

in music. This is an open space for all music lovers and aspiring recording artist. Open to all members, recommended for new members.

Photography Meetup

Do you love taking photos with your camera or phone? Are you stuck in “auto mode” on your camera because “manual mode” seems too intimidating? Do you want to learn the basic understandings of exposures and other basics of your camera and photography? Join us in this creative open space to get the support and training you need to be a great photographer! Open to all members, recommended for new members.

Media Creator Meetup (CMG)

Join our Media Creator team for the opportunity to exercise your creativity. Earn volunteer hours while working to build the NEST community through small projects in graphic design, photography, videography, and music production. This is a creative space, for creative thinkers, who have some creative solutions.

PEOPLE, PROJECTS + LEADERSHIP

Organizations need people who can support good team dynamics.. PP+L gives you hands-on experience managing projects and building teams - valuable skills that can lead to careers in Project Managements, Event Coordination, Human Resources, and Marketing.

 

Introduction to Project Management

Do you have a project you’re working on and need some pro organization tips to make it happen? All members are invited to learn project management essentials through Google’s Applied Digital Skills training. Together, we will learn all about the process of making a professional-level plan that will set you up for success no matter how big or small your project is! Required for all CMGs.

Dates: 10/10 - 11/28

NEST Launch Pad (coming soon!) 

At Digital NEST, we work together to build all the skills we need to thrive. That includes life skills. Some may call them “soft skills,” but we think it just means working well with others. Communicating clearly. Being able to tackle unknown problems and stick with them. Spotting new opportunities and taking initiative. Understanding what your colleagues, clients, and community really need and being able to show them you have what it takes, and tons more!


Impactathon: Community Tech and Social Change (coming soon!) 

Help plan and implement a social change oriented ‘Impactathon’ with undergraduate students in the Everett Program at UC Santa Cruz. This will include learning about non-profit technology needs assessment and actively designing and developing an Impactathon to help develop the right technology tools to meet organizational needs. It also will include a 1 or 2 day intensive work session with UC students, in a collaborative team environment, with all the fun and energy associated with such intensive experiences. Participants can be involved in the design or implementation stage, or both. This activity is open to all. For more information on the Everett Program, see www.everettprogram.org


Events Unit (CMG)

Be part of the event coordination team here at the NEST! You will learn essential career and life skills while working alongside a team as you design, plan and host events like game days, open mic nights, art shows, or whatever the team decides to take on. Future employers and colleges are looking for applicants who have examples of interesting projects and collaboration on their résumés. Stand out by showing off the meaningful community events you’ve coordinated and team building lessons you’ve learned through E-Unit! Open to all members, recommended for new members

NEST Womyn’s Group: Join us for a weekly breather where any and all female-identified people can share and think about things that are going on in our lives. Connect Crew is for members who want to improve their public speaking skills while building community with a fun group of people! Girls Who Code Meetup

Girls Who Code Club is a supportive, fun group that helps female-identified members take the mystery out of tech and coding. We will be meeting up the first Wednesday and last Wednesdays of each month in a light, commitment-free format. The first Wednesday we will have guest speakers that will take people through a hands-on experience to showcase the projects they are working on. The last Wednesday, we will have an open session where we can bring our own projects, pair program and work on prepared small activities, or continue the project started on the first Wednesday. Snacks and drinks are provided. Open to all female-identified + womyn of the NEST, recommended for new members.

WEB + INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS 

No coding experience? No problem! WIT helps you learn about computer science and engineering - including coding, software configuration, and data science. WIT exposes you to careers in Web Design and Development, Video Game Development and IT and Systems Administration.


Cloud Programming with Python Informational Session (A)

Web Development is a very exciting and rapidly-changing field. Everything  is on wifi now and we can build just about anything for an Internet browser. We will be taking CIS 15 - Cloud Programming with Python at Cabrillo to learn more about this field and get started on our journey into web development or information technology. We  will apply, get financial aid and buy materials for the course all at no cost. Come check it out and apply! This is an informational meeting. Cloud Programming with Python Training (B)

Teaches the fundamental concepts and models of application development including the basic concepts of program design, data structures, programming, program solving, programming logic, and fundamental design techniques for event-driven programs. Provides hands-on experience with a modern application programming language and development platform. May be offered in a Distance-Learning Format. The course will take place at the Watsonville Extension campus and online.

Careers in Information Technology (IT) Informational Session (A)

People who know how computers and networks work and how to fix them are in high demand. Think about it, every company and its employees are using computers and you can be the hero that saves the day when someone’s computer crashes or even better, the one that prevented their data from disappearing forever.  Gaining these skills doesn’t have to be hard and we are here to help. Cabrillo provides free trainings to high schoolers and financial aid to those that need it. We can go through the process of applying to the first course, CIS 71 - IT Essentials and support each other throughout. Come check it out and apply! Parents are invited to come to this event!

Information Technology Training (B)

Provides an introduction to the computer hardware and software skills needed to help meet the growing demand for entry-level ICT professionals, Recommended Preparation: CS 1 and CS 1L. Section 2 is a HYBRID ONLINE course. Meets weekly throughout the semester at the scheduled times with an additional 3 hr 5min online lab per week. The course will take place at the Watsonville Extension campus and online.

Advanced Game Development

Grouped into teams or individually, we will be designing and developing games that incorporate advanced functionality like network-play and virtual reality. Additional Information: The following are recommendations for taking this class if you have not taken WIT 1GD or WIT 2GD: Those interested in taking this class should feel comfortable with object oriented programming. Knowledge of C# is recommended but not necessary if you have worked on projects using Java or C++. We recommend that you've developed games using the Unity3D Game Engine or an equivalent.

TeC-E Meetup

As a TeC-E Member, you will develop your soft skills and technical skills by participating in career trainings, courses, and receive hands-on professional experience. TeC-E’s  are the heart of the NEST and they are the first point of contact for new members, parents, and donors. You are the welcome committee, equipment inventory experts, and project managers. TeC-E’s also serve as our tour guides, advertisers, promoters, internal communications, and researchers here at the Digital NEST.  It is up to you to create an unforgettable experience for everyone who walks through our doors. Open to all members, recommended for new members.

Web Development Meetup (C)

Get regular support from peers taking the CIS 15 course at Cabrillo College, work on hands-on activities that will reinforce your understanding of the material and get designated time to do our homework! This course is transferable to any UC or CSU and provides high school credit. Food will be provided.This is for people enrolled in CIS 15 at Cabrillo in the Fall.

IT Essentials Meetup (C)

This meetup is for those taking the CSS-2A at Hartnell Community college.
