Event description

Description

The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the United Nations Association of Sweden and the United Nations World Food Programme invite you to a panel debate followed by the launch of the photo exhibition Faces of Hunger and Conflict on 17 December from 10:30 – 12:00 at Fotografiska in Stockholm.

Where there is conflict, there is hunger. And where there is hunger, there is often conflict. Despite real gains in defeating hunger over recent decades, food insecurity is again on the rise — there are now 821 million hungry people in the world. 60 percent of the world’s 821 million chronically hungry people live in war zones. That is 493 million people suffering from man-made, preventable hunger.

As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, Sweden has been instrumental in driving the historic Security Council Resolution #2417 acknowledging the link between hunger and conflict.
The panelists will discuss how the resolution can be operationalized to prevent and eradicate conflict-induced hunger and how to promote investment in food security to contribute to mitigating severe food insecurity and the risk of conflict.

Doors open at 9:30 for coffee and mingle.
