Extremism and Counter-Extremism: Changing Images, Emerging Realities
Jointly funded by the British Society of Criminology (North-West) and Manchester Metropolitan University, this is a one-day seminar discussing changing perceptions of political extremism and the new world of counter-extremism. Speakers have been invited from a wide range of disciplines. Attendance is open to academics and postgraduate students in Criminology, Law, Sociology and related disciplines, with research interests in the area of extremism and counter-extremism.
This is a 'round table' event: numbers have been kept low enough to allow everyone to participate in discussion in the course of the day. The seminar will close with an open session at which speakers and participants will identify priorities for research and policy development in counter‑terrorism. Participants will be invited to reflect on how they can contribute to an academic and policy response to the developing Prevent agenda, both in their own institutional locations and across the sector.
Confirmed speakers are:
• Gavin Bailey - Research Associate, Manchester Metropolitan University
• Phil Edwards - Lecturer in Criminology, Manchester Metropolitan University
• Neil Ferguson - Professor of Political Psychology, Liverpool Hope University
• Elizabeth Poole - Senior Lecturer in Media, Communications and Culture, Keele University
