Exploring The Senses Through Music And Mindfulness
Facilitated by Liz Wu.
Come explore your five senses (plus one more!) through music, movement, meditation, and play. Each week will focus on a different "sense," and include a warm-up game and close with constructive rest and meditation.
1. Sight - We will listen to music and draw shapes, colors, or images that are inspired by the sounds. We will also explore various instruments and their voices, and play with colors as a way to express their personalities. No experience in visual art necessary.
2. Sound - We will delve into the world of sound, closing the eyes and focusing on the breath and heartbeat, followed by drums, shakers, and more. This will include music meditation for stress relief, focus, and rejuvenation.
3. Smell - The sense of smell is deeply connected to the mind, including memory, alertness, and relaxation. This session will incorporate scents to uplift, energize, and renew, as well as word play opportunities to tell a story.
4. Touch - This session will focus on getting "in touch" with ourselves - literally! During this time, we will combine light stretching and breath work with drumming and movement to achieve a feeling of balance, well-being, and physical rootedness - as well as an outlet for creative expression. We will also learn some easy, stress-relieving self-massage techniques that can be done anywhere.
5. Taste - Taste is perhaps one of the most intimate senses, as we take in items that nourish and sustain us. This mindfulness practice will include sampling local foods that are sweet, salty, sour, spicy, bitter, earthy, and umami - allowing our tastebuds to help us to fully experience and savor the present moment.
6. Intuition - Called our "sixth sense," intuition is seated in our enteric nervous system (gut feelings). In this contemplative and restorative practice, we will explore the body and mind in gentle, restful poses, as well as connect with the group through the language of music. No words necessary.
Liz Wu is a professional musician (CCM graduate), fitness instructor and drum facilitator who has combined her love of music, movement and wellness into fun, engaging programs for all ages. She has a passion for community-building and organizes the grassroots volunteer group #Kindflash.
