Exploring Copperplate: Lowercase

Nina Tran is a wife to loving husband and a stay-at-home-mom to 3 children.  She and her family are happily based in the San Fernando Valley.Nina has been studying and practicing pointed pen calligraphy since the start of 2015 and specializes in Copperplate (Engrosser's Script) and Spencerian Script.Outside of her home, she enjoys learning and taking calligraphy classes at Ink.Academy in Berkeley, CA and with the Society for Calligraphy guild in Los Angeles, CA.  Her deep love for learning powers and propels her passion for teaching.Check out her work on Instagram:@anintran.

Nina Tran

Copperplate, also referred to as Engrosser’s Script, is a pointed pen calligraphy that has evolved from a handwriting system developed in the mid 17th century called English Roundhand. This beautiful and elegant script is characterized by the contrast of thin (hairline) and thick (shade) strokes, a 55º slant, and delicate forms and loops, all of which are based on a narrow oval.
If you’re looking to learn and/or refine your Copperplate lowercase letters, this intensive class is for you.
 
Objective:
Our goal is to establish a strong foundation for learning letters a-z so you can study and practice at home with confidence and direction.
Description:
In this 4.5-hour class, we will begin with studying the key concepts and basic strokes before moving on to writing the lowercase letterforms. Stroke-by-stroke, we will dissect each letter into component parts and examine the differences and commonalities between other letters. We will learn how to look at and critique your work with keener eyes.
By the end of class, you will have learned:

<LI>Lowercase letters a through z (stroke-by-stroke)</LI>
<LI>How to join letters and proper spacing between letters</LI>
<LI>Drills to help you achieve more consistent letterforms</LI>
<LI>How to study and practice at home</LI>

Prerequisite:
Basic knowledge of how to use a pointed pen is recommended, but not required.
Mandatory Supply List:

<LI>2 of your favorite flexible pointed nibs (ex: Hunt 101,Zebra G, Nikko G, Leonardt Pricipality EF, etc.)</LI>
<LI>Oblique or straight penholder</LI>
<LI>Brown or black ink (ex: walnut, sumi, iron gall, etc.)</LI>
<LI>Pencil</LI>
<LI>Red pen</LI>
</UL>
