Caltech Student-Faculty Programs

This lunch-time program is designed to help undergrads learn more about the research happening at the Jet Propulsion Lab and connect them with possible SURF mentors for next summer.
A boxed lunch will be provided for those who register.
Note: Only U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents are eligible for SURFs and Summer Research programs at JPL
This week's panel includes: 
Aaron Parness leads research on the attachment interfaces between robotic systems and their surrounding environment, working primarily on climbing robots and robotic grippers. Dr. Parness current projects include anchoring systems for Near Earth Objects, where there is virtually no gravity, climbing robots for natural terrain including cliff faces and cave ceilings, micro ground vehicles (<100 grams) with dynamic mobility, and gecko-inspired adhesive anchors. He received bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Creative Writing at MIT, and a MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Dr. Parness is the Group Leader of the Extreme Environment Robots Group at JPL.
Raquel Monje is a systems engineer in the Radar Concepts and Formulation Group, a part of JPL's Radar Science and Engineering Section. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden in 2008. She then joined Caltech as a postdoctoral scholar in physics. She joined JPL in 2015. Her interest and background are focused on development of radio/millimeter/submillimeter technology for Earth, Planetary and Astronomy applications. 
Alexandra Holloway designs and writes software for space missions in the Human Interfaces Group, specializing in ethnographic design research into operability. Alexandra's work with operators of the Deep Space Network led to the design of micro-displays as data-driven mental model realignment tools. As a member of the Data Management team on Mars Science Laboratory, Alexandra authors instructions called sequences to keep the rover’s hard drives empty enough to do more science. Previously to being a designer at JPL, Alexandra taught human-computer interaction at Mills College and computer organization (architecture) at University of California, Santa Cruz.
Planetary Protection Team
Ryan Hendrickson is currently the Planetary Protection implementation lead on the Insight mission and is also involved in Planetary Protection efforts on the Mars 2020 and Europa missions. Ryan received his Bachelor’s Degree is Microbiology from California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo in 2011 and his Masters in Science Education at California State University in 2014.
Sarah Cruz is a Los Angeles native who received her bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Mathematics from Mount St. Mary’s University- Chalon in 2015. Sarah was a Caltech WAVE awardee in summer of  2015 which lead to a JPL internship with the Planetary Protection group were she worked on a project called “Mass Spectrometry Profile database for the rapid identification of spacecraft and associated microbes.”  Sarah was hired in 2017 as a Planetary Protection Engineer for the Mars 2020 mission.
