Caltech Student-Faculty Programs

This lunch-time program is designed to help undergrads learn more about the research happening at the Jet Propulsion Lab and connect them with possible SURF mentors for next summer.
A boxed lunch will be provided for those who register.
Speaker Information:
Dr. Jean-Pierre de la Croix is a Robotics Systems Engineer in the Robotic Systems Estimation, Decision, and Control group. He joined JPL after completing a Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2015. His research focused on new control techniques for large-scale robotic systems, such that humans can easily and effectively interact with these complex systems. At JPL, he continues to work on multi-agent robotics for new and challenging applications.
Amy Hofmann has used analytical instrumentation, experimentation, mathematical modeling, and computational chemistry to try and understand chemical processes and mechanisms operating at the smallest technologically accessible scales in earth and planetary materials. She uses such data to infer the geochemical (and, in some cases, geobiological) context in which these materials formed and how their chemistry may have been altered over time. She is committed to the belief that knowledge gained from these ventures will help inch us toward answers to the Big Questions listed below:
 1. How did life originate on Earth, and has it originated (and evolved) elsewhere within the Solar System?
2. What are the necessary physical parameters of a planetary system that could lead to the emergence of life?
3. Are we alone in the Universe?
Amy received her B.A. in Special Studies from Franklin & Marshall College in 2004, a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from Caltech in 2008 and 2010 respectively. Amy is currently a Research Scientist and Lab Manager in the Icy & Ocean Worlds Simulation Laboratory (Planetary Chemistry & Astrobiology Group.)
Raghvendra Sahai is a Principal Research Scientist at JPL. He got his PhD in Astronomy in 1985 from Caltech. He has over 3 decades of experience in studying mass-loss and jets in evolved stars, using all major space-based observatories (e.g., HST, Chandra, XMM-Newton, Spitzer, GALEX). More recently, his work has included the study of a new class of X-ray emitting binaries, a new class of star-forming nurseries in massive star-forming regions, and the UV emission of exoplanet-host stars. He has over 100 published papers in these areas (several of which have been co-authored with student interns.
 And student speaker Pamela Zhang. Pamela SURFed at JPL this past summer with Didier Keymeulen on a project entitled: Real-time Verification Software for Hyperspectral Data Compression on System-on-Chip: Software for Monitoring Instrument Avionics. Pamela is currently a sophomore majoring in computer science.
