<H3>Pete Schulte and <SPAN CLASS="il">Andrew</SPAN> Raffo <SPAN CLASS="il">Dewar</SPAN><BR>The Lamplighter: An Experiment in Drawing & Sound (2018)</H3>
<H4><BR>Drawing: Graphite, Ink, on Paper / Sound: Four Channel Digital Audio File and Loudspeakers <BR></H4>
<P>The exhibition's featured installation comprises a single drawing by Schulte and a quadraphonic sound installation by <SPAN CLASS="il">Dewar</SPAN> that sonifies and orchestrates real-time brainwave and electrodermal bio-data generated by Schulte as he produced the displayed drawing. Audio recordings from a piezo microphone attached to Schulte’s drawing board, and a device which captured the electromagnetic sounds generated by his electric pencil sharpener also appear as both treated and untreated sound objects.</P>

<H3>Maisie Gholson and MDes C4<BR><STRONG>Black Girlhood and Math</STRONG></H3>
<P>In collaboration with the fourth cohort (C4) of the MDes in Integrative Design (C4) in the Stamps School of Art and Design, Maisie Gholson's project under development endeavors to make visible the experiences of young Black girls in mathematics classrooms. Black girls in mathematics education operate as an invisiblized demographic, who are often relegated to margins within educational research. This work uses binaural audio (3D sound) to construct the meanings of Blackgirlness and mathematics for two young Black girls, known to the listener as Shawna and Mia, during a short walk through the school hallway. Future work entails the development of mathematics classroom-based scenes to support beginning teachers in hearing the complexity of young children's identity construction as mathematics learners. MDes C4 is Gowi Balasubramaniam, Colleen Clark, Megan Freund, Jennifer Low, and Ashley Moon.  </P>
<H3>Christianne Myers<BR><STRONG>BioArtography and Textile Design</STRONG><BR></H3>
<P>Costume designer Christianne Myers' project in progress is a  partnership with the U-M<A HREF="https://bioartography.myshopify.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> BioArtography</A> program to design and create textiles using images of cells. Additionally, using these images, she is learning new digital fabrication techniques to integrate into course work next year. Future projects include using repeating patterns in astrophotography, flora, and cells as a prompt for creative work.  Working with her this term are Hannah Winkler, BFA '22 and Imman Suleiman, Masters candidate in Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. In this exhibit: help match the repeated patterns found in nature: Xray Flowers and BioArtography.</P>

<P><STRONG>Andrew Raffo Dewar</STRONG><SPAN> is a composer, soprano saxophonist, and electronic musician whose work has been performed or installed throughout North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. He appears on nearly two dozen recordings, including recordings with experimental music innovators Anthony Braxton, Bill Dixon, and many others. His scholarship has been published in Leonardo Music Journal, MusikTexte, Jazz Research Journal, The Journal of the Society for American Music, Jazz Perspectives, and in edited volumes by Duke University Press and Oxford University Press. He has received support for his work from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, NewMusicUSA, ASCAP, the Getty Foundation, Arts International, Meet The Composer, The San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dewar holds an MA and PhD in music composition and ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University, and is an Associate Professor in New College and the School of Music at the University of Alabama.</SPAN></P>
<P><STRONG>Maisie Gholson</STRONG> is an assistant professor in the School of Education at the University of Michigan. Within a Black feminist framework, her research seeks to understand how our identities and relational ties to mathematics, peers, and teachers create different developmental trajectories and learning opportunities within mathematics contexts. She actively investigates that which is often dismissed as superfluous to mathematics—children’s social relationships and networks. A driving force in her research is to foreground children’s and adolescents’ humanity, i.e., to take seriously the constructed racialized and gendered backdrop of childhood and adolescence as a visceral context in the process of mathematics identity development. Maisie is a former high school mathematics teacher and prior to that a patent writer in her hometown of Houston, Texas. She is a UM NCID member, STaR Fellow, and a recipient of the Early Career Publication Award in Research in Mathematics Education SIG for AERA, the National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship, the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship in STEM Education, and UIC Graduate College Abraham Lincoln Fellowship. This project is Maisie's first foray into the field of design arts in research.</P>
<P><STRONG>Christianne Myers</STRONG> a freelance costume designer and associate professor of theatre & drama at U-M. Originally from Baltimore, Myers spent 14 years living and working in New York City. Her costume design work spans theatre, opera, industrial work, and film. New York highlights include the Obie Award-winning productions of Music Theatre Group’s <EM>Running Man</EM> and Blue Light’s production of Dare Clubb’s <EM>Oedipus</EM> starring Frances McDormand and Billy Crudup.</P>
<P><STRONG>Pete Schulte</STRONG><SPAN> received an MFA in painting and drawing from The University of Iowa in 2008. He has held recent solo exhibitions at Jeff Bailey Gallery, Hudson New York; Whitespace Gallery, Atlanta; Luise Ross Gallery, New York City; The Woskob Family Gallery at Penn State University; and The Visual Arts Gallery at The University of Alabama-Birmingham. His work has been included in recent group exhibitions at The Spring/Break Art Show, New York City; The Schick Art Gallery at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, New York; Zeitgeist Gallery, Nashville; The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Atlanta; Transmitter Gallery, Brooklyn; Looke&Listen, Saint-Chamas, France; and at Jeff Bailey Gallery. Art in America, World Sculpture News, Burnaway, and The New Art Examiner have reviewed his work, among other publications. Schulte is the 2017 Southern Art Prize Fellowship Winner for the state of Alabama. In 2018 Schulte will present a solo exhibition at Whitespace and his work will be featured in group exhibitions at McKenzie Fine Art, New York, City, and Hemphill Fine Art in Washington D.C. Pete Schulte lives in Birmingham, Alabama and is Associate Professor of Art at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In 2013 he co-founded The Fuel And Lumber Company curatorial initiative with artist Amy Pleasant. His work is represented by Jeff Bailey Gallery, Hudson, New York and Whitespace Gallery, Atlanta.</SPAN></P>
