<H2>Synopsis</H2>
<P>Experimental design is a key step in scientific research in the life sciences. This workshop first introduces some basic concepts and principles of experimental design (replication, randomization, blocking and power) and then considers a range of case studies. Drawing on experience from statistical consulting in the agricultural sciences and biology, the focus will be on non-standard, somewhat more complex design problems that are not usually covered in textbooks. I will also present some recent research on two-phase experiments, i.e. experiments that have two phases and require blocked design choices in both phases. While analysis is not discussed in any detail, it is emphasized in the examples that experimental design necessarily requires a statistical model, typically a linear model, and thus design and analysis are inextricably intertwined.</P>

<P><A CLASS="acton-tabs-link-processed" HREF="https://biostatistik.uni-hohenheim.de/en/116899/hans-peter-piepho-en" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hans-Peter Piepho</A> was appointed Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany in 2001. He has been working as an applied statistician in agricultural research for almost 20 years. His main interests are related to statistical procedures as needed in plant genetics, plant breeding and cultivar testing. Recent interests include marker-assisted breeding (genomic prediction), spatial methods for field trials and experimental design for various applications including RNAseq, plant phenotyping and series of experiments.</P>
