CHOP SHOP’s mission is to offer insight on contemporary dance and its creative process, in order to forge deeper connections between artists and audiences through presentation, education, dialogue, and experience. Join CHOP SHOP: Bodies of Work for a free, fun, and no experience necessary modern dance class with teaching artist Eva Stone! 

Join CHOP SHOP: Bodies of Work for a free, fun, and no experience necessary modern dance class! Offered in partnership with Bellevue College and The City of Bellevue Parks and Community Services Department, the FREE Experience Dance Program accompanies the CHOP SHOP: Bodies of Work Contemporary Dance Festival, held online in January and February 2021. Intro to Modern Dance is a fun dance technique class for those interested in learning basic modern dance movement vocabulary: no previous dance experience is necessary! Teaching artist Eva Stone will lead you through a series of dance exercises exploring the type of movement presented at CHOP SHOP Contemporary Dance Festival. Intro to Modern Dance is open to all over the age of 8 and all abilities. Please dress in comfortable clothing that's easy to move in and make sure you clear a small space with level flooring where you can dance. Class ScheduleNote: Both classes include the same content and you do not need to register for both sessions. FAQsHow do I join the class? Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering Intro to Modern Dance - and all our festival programming - online. Once you've registered for the class of your choice, you'll receive a confirmation email that includes a link to join the class via Zoom. Don't worry: we'll also send you a reminder email with the link shortly before the class begins!Do I need to reserve a ticket for each member of my household?No - since we're holding classes online this year, you can just reserve a single ticket for your entire household. Is there an admission charge or fee to participate in Intro to Modern Dance?No - Intro to Modern Dance is offered completely free of charge! Are there minimum age requirements for Intro to Modern Dance?We recommend Intro to Modern Dance for all over the age of 8, but we have had younger participants in the past.How should I prepare for the class?Please dress in comfortable clothing that's easy to move in and similar to what you might wear for yoga, jogging, or other type of physical exercise. Depending on what type of flooring you have at home, you may be most comfortable barefoot, in socks, or in tennis shoes - please be sure that whatever option you choose isn't too slippery or too sticky on your flooring. We also recommend taking a moment to clear a small space with level flooring where you can dance. Check the area carefully to ensure there are no items you might trip over or bump into, including any items overhead. Are participants required to take both classes?Each class is intended as a standalone session, but you're welcome to attend both if you'd like! Please note that the content of both classes will be similar, so you'll be repeating some exercises if you do attend both classes. What other programming do you offer? In 2021, CHOP SHOP Contemporary Dance Festival offers a fully online program of events, including no experience necessary dance classes, dance films, master classes for experienced dancers, artist talks, and more.
