Executive Functioning Therapy: Working with Resistance
Executive function isn't just a skill—it's about connection. Learn to work with client resistance to bridge the gap from "can't" to "can."
As practitioners, we often approach Executive Function (EF) as a series of logistical hurdles to be cleared with planners, timers, and checklists. But when a client meets these tools with resistance, the skills-based approach falls apart.
This workshop is designed for therapists who want to learn how to support their most complex and resistant clients with EF. We will explore the vital link between cognitive skill-building and emotional connection, shifting the focus from compliance to collaboration.
Important: A Foundation for Success
This session is the direct follow-up to our foundational training, Executive Functioning Therapy: From Core Concepts to Advanced Neurodiversity-Affirming Strategies
While we’ll briefly recap the core concepts of that session, we highly recommend watching the first training before we dive in. That session establishes the groundwork for my 3-step model (Shame -> Mindfulness -> Skillfulness). Without that foundational context, it is difficult to move a client past the "shame" block and into spontaneous action. Get the full framework here to ensure these advanced strategies have fertile ground to take root.
What We Will Cover:
- The Anatomy of Resistance: Why executive dysfunction is often a protective emotional response rather than a lack of willpower.
- Bridging the Gap: Practical techniques to help clients transition from a state of "can't" (what we call resistance) to a state of "can."
- Working With the "Why": Using the client's resistance as a roadmap for their specific connection & EF needs.
Who is this for?
This session is ideal for mental health professionals working with neurodivergent people and others who struggle with executive function, who are tired of the "tug-of-war" and are looking for a more empathic, effective way to support their clients' growth.
Join us to transform resistance into your most powerful tool for progress.
Note: Licensed mental health therapists in the U.S. can receive 1 CE for this training.
About the Presenter Lila Low-Beinart, MA, LPC, LMHC, is a specialist in working with highly complex clients where traditional "workbook" strategies often fall short. "Lila Low-Beinart is the real deal: a presenter who owns the room and an expert who makes neurodiversity affirming therapy accessible" - Marc Azoulay LPC, LAC, CGP, ACS
