EVOLVE

Destiny Arts Center inspires and ignites social change through the arts by providing safe and welcoming spaces for young people to express themselves. Using movement arts, we uplift youth voice to build a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and free. Dedicated to social change, our work supports pathways for young people to  fight against the systemic racism that continues to impact Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). In our North Oakland studios, at school and community partner sites, and on stages throughout the Bay Area, Destiny Arts Center serves over 2,600 students ages 3 to 18 each year.  During the pandemic, we have adapted to provide robust online movements arts programming. Our process creates a tightly knit community of peers that cuts across geography, age and socio-economics, busting down walls and building bridges towards a beloved community. Rooted in the values of love, respect, care, responsibility, honor and peace since 1988, Destiny moves at the intersection of the arts, civic engagement, and social change.

Destiny Arts Center

EVOLVE brings together a cast of 55 talented performers ages 9 to 83 who use an enthralling  combination of hip-hop, modern and aerial dance, theater, body percussion, spoken word, and song in a full-length original work that tackles some of the most pressing social issues of our time.
In EVOLVE, a dynamic docent takes a school group on a tour of “The Museum of Forgotten Truths,” where exhibits on gender, race, immigration, technology and food, featuring the visionary voices of inspiring Bay Area activists likes Brandi Mack and Krea Gomez, highlight stories that don’t always get told in the history books, but that desperately need to be heard. 
EVOLVE is a multimedia dance/theater production created by artistic directors Sarah Crowell and Rashidi Omari in collaboration with the teenage performers from the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company, the Destiny Junior Company (9-12 year olds) and the Elders Project, a group of 16 grandmothers ages 60-83.  The performance is accompanied by powerful video, photography, and graphic art created by Destiny’s New Media Arts program, under the direction of Yoram Savion of Yak Films. NOTE: EVOLVE is appropriate for young peoples ages 10 and up.
