Life can occasionally feel tedious, boring, and uninspiring, yet some of the strangest mysteries lie hidden in our daily lives. Join us and four professional speakers from all walks of life in investigating everyday wonders that we all take for granted. Bio: Amruti Borad is a Concierge Osteopathic Family Medicine Physician, a Medical Student and Physician Coach, Entrepreneur, Wellness Blogger, new mother, daughter, sister, and wife, from Southern California. She was previously a Physician leader and after experiencing burnout, she found a new path in medicine that has brought back the joy in practicing medicine by allowing her to develop more meaningful relationships with her patients. She also certified as a life coach to serve future and current Physicians in a way she never imagined- guiding and collaborating with them to prevent and treat burnout, successfully navigate the inevitable transitions that occur within medical education and as healthcare professionals, rediscover fulfillment in medicine, and learn to thrive in any environment. In this process, she also discovered the power of her own voice, which has led her to the TEDx stage!

<h4>Why we lie to our doctors (and on a first date)</h4>

Description: How is going on a date with someone you met online related to going to see your doctor? Well, as a female Physician, as is likely in other demanding professions, there was limited time to meet people, so I turned to online dating, and that is when I began to connect the dots between these two seemingly disparate worlds: the dishonesty amongst my dates seemed to parallel the tendency and reasons for patients to lie. In fact, a recent study found that up to 80% of patients have lied to their doctors and another study found that almost exactly the same percentage of people--81%--lied on their online dating profiles; We do this for the same reasons: fear of rejection, not wanting to disappoint, amongst others. However, not misrepresenting yourself on a date will lead to more fulfilling relationships and not lying to or withholding information from your doctor will improve the quality of your life, lead to better health outcomes and may even save your life. Bio: Barry Burd received a master’s degree in computer science at Rutgers University and a PhD in mathematics at the University of Illinois. As a teaching assistant in Champaign–Urbana, Illinois, he was elected five times to the university-wide List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by Their Students. Since 1980, Dr. Burd has been a professor in the department of mathematics and computer science at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. He has spoken at conferences in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia, and in 2020, he was honored to be named a Java Champion. He is the author of many articles and books, including Java For Dummies, published by Wiley, and Quantum Computing Algorithms, published by Packt.

<h4>Airline Pricing Defies Logic</h4>

Description: If you struggled to find the best flight for a trip, you're not alone. The airlines' websites show you dozens of options, restrictions on fares appear everywhere, and last-minute fees add to your total cost. Each travel site claims that its software finds the best prices. But how reasonable is that claim? Is flight shopping merely confusing, or is there something inherently challenging about the airfare optimization problem? Researcher Carl de Marcken studied this question and came to some surprising conclusions. De Marcken showed that a simple version of the optimization problem is what specialists call NP-hard or intractable. The scale of the problem grows too quickly for any hardware to keep up. So solving the problem with our best systems isn't feasible. De Marcken went further and proved that solving the fully-formed flight optimization problem is theoretically unsolvable. No matter how much computing power is available, you can't find the best flight from home to Atlanta. Leveraging her masters in public health, Sarene’s research on the harmful effects of clothing production has led her to believe pollution from the clothing production industry is a public health crisis.
