We are two group practices offering outpatient mental health in the greater San Diego area. Coastal Continuing Education is approved by the California Psychological Association to provide continuing professional education for Psychologists. Licensed Mental Health Professionals can earn 6 continuing education credits to satisfy the Law &amp; Ethics requirement for licensure renewal. Dr. Perper has added new content to address the many questions arising from the current COVID-19 pandemic and its&#x27; impact on mental health treatment.Course Description:Ethical and legal obligations are frequently taught to therapists as a set of rigid rules that must be applied unequivocally. However, the realities of clinical practice are that we are often faced with situations that do not allow for a clear identification and application of relevant laws and ethical guidelines. Broadening our knowledge of law and ethics through a deeper understanding of the standard of care in the clinical practice of psychotherapy can help us feel less anxious and make more informed legal, ethical and clinical decisions. This course will address relevant ethical and legal considerations and the practical application of the following principles: risk management, mandated reporting, limits of confidentiality, informed consent, key issues in treating children and adolescents, record keeping guidelines, telehealth practice, HIPAA guidelines, marketing, responding to requests for records and subpoenas, and establishing a professional will. This course will focus on questions by clinicians in private practice, as well as agency and clinic-based legal and ethical concerns. Learning Objectives1.	Describe the law and ethical principles related to limits of confidentiality including mandated reporting and responding to danger to others2.	Apply legal and ethical responsibilities around informed consent in clinical practice 3.	Identify suicide risk assessment methods and empirically supported suicide prevention interventions 4.	Practice implementing professional will procedures and practice 5.	Summarize the current legal and ethical status of child abuse reporting mandates 6. Dr. Perper is the founder and Principal Psychologist of Therapy Changes, a multi-disciplinary, multispecialty group Psychology practice in San Diego, California. Dr. Perper has established a caring practice with a specialty in grief and loss-related issues including traumatic grief. Dr. Perper believes in the power of community and is dedicated to promoting collaboration within the field of mental health.Dr. Perper earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Child and Family studies from California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University (CSPP-AIU) and served as Adjunct Professor from 2012-2015. She had the privilege of serving on the San Diego Psychological Association (SDPA) Ethics Committee, which is a nominated position from 2012–2018 and Chair of the Committee from 2016-2018. Dr. Perper is the former chair of the San Diego Psychological Associations Committee for Ethics and Standards.Dr. Perper has facilitated continuing education courses for SDPA and AIU on a variety of topics including law and ethics, dream interpretation, grief and loss, and traumatic grief. She is an invited speaker to various community groups and professional organizations including UCSD and USD Student Counseling Services, Sharp Hospice, VITAS Hospice, the American Cancer Society and the San Diego County District Attorney Victim Advocacy program. In addition, Dr. Perper has authored several articles on topics related to ethics in private practice, as well as grief and loss.
