10:45 am | Changing the Culture: Addressing Bullying & Workplace Harassment

The EEOC suggests our continuing efforts to battle harassment and bullying by educating employees, enforcing clear zero-tolerance policies, and firm disciplinary consequences produces, at best, temporary success. Longer lasting progress requires earlier intervention for uncivil behavior, rather than waiting for illegal behavior. We focus on the ability of supervisors to set a positive direction by empowering employees to be influential bystanders who can create a cultural shift and significantly improve the workplace.

12:30 pm | Warning Signs: Safety Issues and Protected Rights

Supervisors are a primary channel of communication between employees and upper management and a critical early warning system of possible problems. A passing comment such as “that appears dangerous” or “my back hurts” might be a legally sufficient trigger to warrant further inquiry about possible protected rights. Review a list of likely scenarios which can’t be ignored and must prompt management attention.

Telecommuting is practical and sensible in many instances. Often, the greatest obstacle to successful remote work arrangements is the supervisor’s mindset. “If I can’t see them, how can I be sure they are working?” Learn the steps supervisors can take to overcome this roadblock and make sure all the traditional recordkeeping and production monitoring gets done, and no one gets hurt.
