Values and edges are fundamental aspects of watercolor painting that greatly influence the visual impact and overall quality of the artwork.

Values refer to the range of lights and darks in a painting. They create contrast and depth, helping to define shapes and convey the three-dimensional form of objects. Skillful manipulation of values allows an artist to create a sense of volume, highlight focal points, and establish the overall mood of the painting.

Edges, on the other hand, pertain to the transitions between different shapes and values in a painting. Soft edges create a sense of distance or softness, while hard edges can emphasize crispness and proximity. Managing edges skillfully helps artists control the flow of the viewer's gaze, directing attention to important elements and leading the eye through the composition.

In watercolor painting, where the medium's transparent nature allows for delicate layering and subtle variations, mastering values and edges becomes particularly crucial. Proper control over the intensity of pigments and the management of edges can help achieve a sense of realism or express a particular artistic style.

This workshop will include demonstrations, exercises and direct application to subject matter.
