Welcome to the English Vertical Alignment Summer Institute!
Texas Tech Public Media and Region 17 invite you to an in-depth week of advanced acdemic English training for teachers grade 6-10. This 4 day training will help teachers better prepare their students for the rigors of advanced placement and honors english courses in high school.
This institute will take place in-person at the Region 17 ESC campus in Lubbock, Texas.
After attending this summer institute teachers will be able to:
- Align instruction with the goals of the specific AP course.
- Identify the skills and knowledge that the exam will assess, and identify the tasks and materials for which students might need more preparation.
- Draft a syllabus that meets the curricular requirements for the course.
- Make equitable access a guiding principle in designing instruction.
- Connect with other new and experienced teachers in your content area.
- Utilize new resources to enhance your instruction.
- Receive a certificate of completion for 30 hours of professional development.
This training will be lead by Shawna Lynch, an accomplished AP Consultant, College Board grader and table leader.

Sessions will run from 8:15am-5:00pm Monday-Thursday. Participants will receive a one hour lunch break. The specific schedule for each day will be determined by your AP consultant. Participants must attend the full 4 days to receive credit.
There is ample free parking available at Region 17 Education Service Center. You will want to park in the lots on the west side of the building.
No. Region 17 Education Service Center is located around a variety of restaurants. Each day, participants will get an hour for lunch. Some snacks will be provided during break times.
Wi-Fi will be available throughout the building, so feel free to bring a device along if you wish. However, we will also have laptops available for checkout.
a journal or something to take notes, something to write with, a thumb drive (or something to store files). If you have your own personal laptop, please feel free to bring that. You will be able to access the Wi-Fi network at Region 17 ESC. Laptops are available for checkout.
Casual dress is fine. However temperatures vary in classrooms (can be on the cooler side), so please plan accordingly.
Yes, your account needs to be paid in full before the Summer Institute start date. Registration only holds a place for you. Your registration is not confirmed until your payment is received.
If you are a mother who is nursing and you need a private room to pump, please let contact us beforehand and we will make sure that we have a private room available for you.
We realize it's hard to leave a child behind, especially if you're a mother who is nursing, however for safety reasons and to respect the learning experience for others paying teachers, we cannot allow babies/children to attend with you.
Texas Tech Public Media - PBS/NPR is the organizer of this AP Institute and it is taking place at Region 17 Education Service Center. We are committed to providing quality learning experiences for teachers in our area and this is one of the ways that we are living out our mission.
Certificates will be emailed to participants at the conclusion of the institute.
