Engaged Buddhism

Find your people, Find your practice. We are a place where community and contemplation meet. No more trying to be mindful alone.The Hive exists to develop creative, compassionate, and mindfully-engaged citizens in the Cincinnati region, and online through small group classes and workshops. We have curated a collective of proven teachers, facilitators, and spiritual directors to help guide your learning in mindfulness, contemplation, art and action. We hope you'll try a class and like it enough to become a regular member. Your partnership helps make this nonprofit possible.(As a social enterprise, the Hive shares our story with photos of classes and events. If you are opposed to sharing your lovely face, let us know and we'll do our best to avoid that. But, by using an event ticket you agree to let The Hive share your image in photo, audio, and video form. Do you have some sort of daily contemplative practice? Explore how your contemplative practice invites application in the world, especially in response to and in light of ubiquitous suffering.  
Thich Nhat Han says, "Do not avoid contact with suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the life of the world. Find ways to be with those who are suffering, including personal contact, visits, images, and sounds. By such means, awaken yourself and others to the reality of suffering in the world." 
This class will explore Engaged Buddhism and its possible relevance to our lives through readings, video, writing, meditation practice, and conversation. Texts we will explore include Not Turning Away: The Practice of Engaged Buddhism, edited by Susan Moon, The Engaged Spiritual Life, by Donald Rothberg, and Interbeing, by Thich Nhat Hanh. The Buddhist Peace Fellowship’s rich archive of talks and interviews by eminent practitioners and teachers will also serve as a resource. 
Mary Clare Rietz is a social practice artist living in Cincinnati. Her background in community organizing and love of art come together in ways that set off fireworks in her body, mind, and heart. Mary Clare completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at UC DAAP in 2016, just a couple of years past her personal half-century mark. Starting in 2006, husband Mike Marcotte, American Buddhist scholar, writer, and teacher David Loy, several other Cincinnati folks, and Mary Clare co-founded and co-ran an active local chapter of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship.
This 4 week class will meet on June 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th.
