Students will be introduced to the field and will learn how to get started on research in this area.Abstract:In recent years, there has been rapid development in neural recording and behavioral tracking technologies. Such technologies have allowed researchers to collect a large amount of neural signals across large populations and multiple brain regions, as well as abundant and diverse animal behavior videos. The ultimate goal is to use these large-scale neural and behavioral datasets to gain a deeper understanding of complex neuro-behavioral relationships. With such a vast amount of data available, it is now possible to translate neuroscience questions, theories, and prior knowledge into statistical models and employ statistical data-based methods to solve them. Therefore, in this talk, I will introduce a set of statistical machine learning techniques for analyzing neural and behavioral datasets. These techniques include generalized linear models, latent variable models, and deep generative models for neural data analysis; pose estimation, behavioral segmentation, and decision-making for behavior analysis; as well as neuro-behavioral decoding models. By providing a roadmap of mainstream machine learning methods, my aim is to demonstrate how these methods can be used to tackle various formats of data and provide scientific insights for neuroscience studies.Biography:Anqi Wu is an Assistant Professor at the School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE), Georgia Institute of Technology. She was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, the Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute, Columbia University. She received her Ph.D. degree in Computational and Quantitative Neuroscience and a graduate certificate in Statistics and Machine Learning from Princeton University. Anqi was selected for the 2018 MIT Rising Star in EECS, 2022 DARPA Riser, and 2023 Alfred P. Sloan Fellow. Her research interest is to develop scientifically-motivated Bayesian statistical models to characterize structure in neural data and behavior data in the interdisciplinary field of machine learning and computational neuroscience. She has a general interest in building data-driven models to promote both animal and human studies in the system and cognitive neuroscience.
