WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Pregnant women 30-36 weeks of pregnancy and their birth partner (father of baby, friend, doula, or family members who can attend at no additional charge).


INSTRUCTOR

This course will be taught by JORDAN FULLOW, CCE, CLE, CD, CPD a Certified Childbirth Educator, Certified Doula and Certified Lactation Educator and Certified Postpartum Doula with Happy Mama Healthy Baby Alliance's Community Doula Program . There will also be a presentation by our Fatherhood Program Coordinator, Mr. TeDese Ross. at session #4 just for dads-to-be.



FORMAT

This is a 4-week series of classes that meets from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm PST on Zoom. The course is designed to be taken as a series, and for best results, we recommend that you enroll in the complete series. However, you can also register for one class at a time. Please register for all sessions or single sessions in advance.


WHAT YOU WILL LEARN


Class One: Understanding Birth

Understanding the birth process; anatomy and physiology of childbirth including when to go to the birthing place will be discussed. We will also discuss common discomforts of pregnancy and ways to cope.


Class Two: Coping with Labor

Coping with labor and delivery, breathing techniques, comfort measures for labor, and support methods for partners will be demonstrated and practiced. This class is focused on the dad/partner's role in providing advocacy and comfort measures during labor. (Any family or friends who will attend the birth are welcome to attend this session at no additional charge).


Class Three: Making Informed Choices

Understanding your options for childbirth including pain medication options and medical interventions benefits and risks. We will also discuss prevention of cesarean section and vaginal birth after a prior cesarean, and creating a birth plan and tips on communicating with medical professionals and your rights and responsibilities as a birthing person.


Class Four: Postpartum Planning

In this class, you will learn what to expect in the postpartum period, including physical and emotional recovery from childbirth. Also discussed are baby care basics such as diapering, bathing, swaddling and soothing techniques and making informed choices for your baby's medical care such as immunization and circumcision. Also, breastfeeding basics will be discussed such as positions for feeding your baby, and dealing with common problems such as sore nipples and low milk supply and returning to work or school as a breastfeeding mom, and how fathers can help in baby care and mother's recovery. There will also be a presentation by Mr. TeDese Ross, our Fatherhood Program Coordinator on the father's role in caring for the new mother and baby.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds are only allowed if your baby arrives before the start of the session you registered for. We will refund the amount minus a $50 administrative fee.

Is this class only for pregnant women?

No, it is designed for the pregnant woman and her birth partner (father of baby, spouse, domestic partner, spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife). Additional support people such as doula, grandparent, friend, may attend at no additional charge.

Happy Mama Healthy Baby Alliance was founded in 2020.  HMHBA is a community-based, non-governmental organization located in Los Angeles, California, USA. We are  501 (c) (3) non-profit public charity 509 (a) (2), our IRS name is Wholistic Midwifery School of Southern California, founded in 1993.

 

We are multidisciplinary perinatal and mental health professionals united in a common vision to promote maternal and infant health, improve maternity care quality and access, reduce perinatal health disparities and achieve social justice in maternal and infant health for all childbearing families.

 

Our board of directors, advisory committee and consultants are mental and perinatal health experts with training and expertise in Doula Support,  midwifery,  nursing, pre and perinatal psychology, social work, psychiatry,  obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, preventative care, global public health, and health education and promotion.

To promote high-quality, family-centered, evidence-based, respectful maternity and newborn care, and improved health outcomes for all childbearing persons and their babies.

 OUR WORK 

Our work focuses on addressing health care disparities and to engendering birthing justice for all pregnant women, persons and their infants.   As ethnically diverse, multidisciplinary professionals serving pregnant and parenting families,  we offer Doula services, childbirth preparation classes, breastfeeding support, and maternal- infant mental health workshops and support groups and opportunities for continuing education for professionals.

 

We also offer professional training, certification, learning and networking opportunities for mental health providers and social service and health professionals working with Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health populations.

As advocates for families and babies, we seek to ensure that all childbearing persons are treated with dignity and respect during the pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum periods.We promote a self-growth approach to pregnancy; which is a special and unique time in a woman’s and a person’s life.

We believe each pregnant woman or person should be surrounded by a loving and supportive community and each baby should be born into the hands of skilled, compassionate and respectful caregivers.

We protect the Mother/Baby dyad whose needs are mutually dependent.

We are reverent of the sacred nature of birth and are inspired by its potential to transform women, relationships, families, and communities.

We strive to improve birth outcomes for women and infants where perinatal health disparities and inequities exist.

We aim to improve the quality of maternity and newborn care in all settings.We are dedicated to helping families have empowering, satisfying and joyous experiences from conception through gestation, childbirth, and early parenthood.
