EMPHASIS Summer School 

Established at the University of Torino in 2002, the Centre of Competence for innovation in the agro-environmental field,carries out basic and applied research, knowledge and technology transfer, life-long learning and communication on up-to-date topics in the agro-environmental and agro-food sectors.It has several national and internationalcollaborations, with public Institutions and the private sector. The Centre possesses extensive facilities including laboratories, experimental fields and greenhouses and hosts a National Certified laboratory for diagnostics of plant pathogens.AGROINNOVA is located at the University Campus of Grugliasco (Turin) and has modern and well-equipped laboratories, greenhouses and experimental fields. Two University professors, more than 40 Ph. D. students, post-doc fellows, consultants and technicians, more than 100 research projects worldwide, 23 of which funded by the European Commission and NATO), 90 high level courses carried out during the period 2003-2016. These are some of the figures of AGROINNOVA.Seventy per cent of AGROINNOVA’s human resources works in basic and applied research, 25% in technology transfer at national and international level, with administrative staff making up for the remaining 5%.During the past years AGROINNOVA gained a broad expertise in the coordination of European projects as well as in knowledge and technology transfer in developing and emerging economies, such as China and India.AGROINNOVA top’s organization consists of a President, a Director and a Scientific Council, composed of Italian and foreign eminent researchers representing partner institutions as well as top managers from Institutions and companies. The Scientific Council has the important task to address the activities of AGROINNOVA and represents a network that can easily interact in the realization of complex projects, competing successfully for international tenders.The activity of AGROINNOVA is organized into five areas:The Plant Pathology Group (PPG) has extensive experience in biology, epidemiology and management of plant pathogens of economically important horticultural crops. It developed through the years expertise in the case of disease management in innovative cultural methods (e.g. soilless cultivation) and in new production sectors (e.g. ready-to-eat vegetables).The Plant Disease Management Group (PDMG) is actively involved in sustainable plant disease management in horticultural crops, by adopting cultural. Physical, biological, and chemical measures. Special attention is devoted to plant biosecurity, eradication of seed-and soilborne pathogens and soil and substrate disinfestation.The Molecular Research Group (MRG) has experience in DNA molecular marker technologies applied to detection of plant pathogens and biocontrol agents, fungicide resistance, development of pathogen diagnostics, risk analysis studies, development of counter measures against crop bioterrorism.The Food Safety Group (FSG) has experience in the prevention of contamination of foodstuff by mycotoxins, in the development of biocontrol agents and innovative control techniques against post-harvest diseases.The Transfer of Technology Group (TTG) operates both at national and international level and is strongly involved in the transfer of technology in the field of sustainable agriculture and environmental protection in countries such as China, India, Serbia, Egypt, Morocco and Rumania.

AGROINNOVA, Centre of Competence for Innovation in the Agro-Environmental Field, University of Torino

EMPHASIS project (Effective Management of Pests and Harmful Alien Species – Integrated Solutions) aims to ensure a European food security system and the protection of biodiversity and of ecosystem services while developing integrated mechanisms of response measures (practical solutions) to predict, to prevent and to protect agriculture and forestry systems from native and alien pests threats. 
The reduction in available plant protection products and the requirement of EU Member States to promote low pesticide input and implement IPM principles, as a result of EU hazard-based legislation, is a key driver for the development of alternative and sustainable pest strategies. However, the key to attaining greater uptake of alternative strategies is through providing products or methodologies that can perform as well as traditional pesticides, whilst at the same time providing the same ease of use and cost effectiveness.
The overall goal of EMPHASIS is to develop and promote the take-up of practical and effective solutions to prevent and protect European crops from native and alien pest threats, improving productivity and resilience of European agriculture, in the context of climate change.
 The course is made up of three sections:

<LI>innovative strategies for diagnosis and management in horticultural crops;</LI>
<LI>emerging pests in horticultural crops;</LI>
<LI>use of LAMP technology.</LI>
</UL>
This course aims to train young researchers on epidemiological issues related to emerging pests and pathogens, and on innovative management strategies in horticultural systems. It also aims to provide skills about the use of innovative and effective diagnostic systems.
Molecular methods based on DNA analysis are widely used in plant disease diagnostic, due to their high efficiency, sensitivity, specificity and rapidity for early detection and identification of a broad range of plant pathogens and pests. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is an emergent molecular tool offering rapid, accurate, and cost-effective diagnosis of plant diseases. LAMP assay enables to use fast DNA extraction methods suitable for on-site application. In addition this assay uses an enzyme tolerant to chemical inhibitors often found in environmental samples, making this method an excellent tool for the in-field detection of plant pathogens.
The purpose of the course is to familiarize trainees with the basic principles of LAMP as diagnostic tool and to train them on in-field DNA extraction methods and common instruments/reagents of a LAMP assay. The course will provide trainees the basis for designing, performing and troubleshooting a LAMP assay, according to EPPO Standard PM 7/98. 
Training about LAMP technology will be structured on two levels (Basic and Advanced) to address different training needs of participants.
The Basic Course will be held in Italian language.
