Emory Libraries Anti-Racism Forum

The DEI, LEAF, and LAC leadership will be hosting a second Anti-Racist Forum for Emory Libraries on August 4, 2020 at 3pm. This forum, we will be joined by leaders of the Senior Management Team to further discuss how we can promote and implement anti-racism in the different areas around the library.

The Active Pursuit of Anti-Racism

As we integrate anti-oppression into the culture of our organization, where do you feel you need more education? What trainings and readings have been most helpful to you? The DEI Committee will share some specific resources and invite discussion about what else Emory Libraries should pursue in the way of trainings and education for our community. 

Coping and Self-Care Strategies

Experiencing microaggressions and systemic racism on a daily basis is exhausting. This discussion will be an opportunity to share and learn skills for building resilience and centering your emotional and mental well-being. Also learn about campus resources available to help you with coping and wellness skills. The breakout room will not feature a member from SMT.

Anti-Racism in Collections and Metadata

As the libraries, we want to make sure we are addressing, integrating, and accentuating diversity and social justice into collection development and addressing harmful language that may exist in bibliographic descriptions created in the past.  This discussion will cover what Emory Libraries are doing to address both collection development and challenge harmful language in the vocabularies we use to describe our collections.

Anti-Racism in Reference and Instruction

Those of us who provide reference and instruction services encounter students from all walks of life. How can we integrate and articulate our commitment to anti-racism through our teaching practice and at the reference desk? This discussion will provide an opportunity to share and develop ideas. 

Anti-Racism in Our Physical and Virtual Spaces

Emory Libraries' physical and virtual spaces welcome millions of visitors every year. How can we ensure our institutions commitment to anti-racism is clearly demonstrated in these spaces? 

Anti-Racism in Programming and Exhibits

As the libraries, we want to make sure we are hosting and presenting quality events and exhibits that are representative of the many diverse audiences and cultures we see on and off campus. This discussion will focus on collecting best practices for the events and exhibition teams to ensure we are being inclusive and welcoming to everyone.

Closing the Representation Gap in Librarianship

According to Census data, 81% of librarians identify as White, while only 6% identify as Black (non-Hispanic). How can Emory Libraries actively contribute to better racial and ethnic representation in our profession?
