About this event

This workshop, open to all ages (under 18 must be accompanied by an adult), is for anyone eager to learn how basic embroidery stitches can be used in a unique way … by applying stitches to their own photos to create a “one of a kind” artwork!

In this workshop, attendees will learn basic photo transfer tricks using their own photos (sent to the instructor in advance or those provided by the teacher) as well as basic embroidery stitches and floss options. Students can stitch on photos or fabric or articles of their own choosing.

The instructor will teach her favorite stitches … the french knot and satin stitch, as well as some embroidery favorites like the petal stitch, running stitch and blanket stitch.  Each student can create a "sampler" of these stitches and then jump into a small project—stitching on a photo or on one of their own garments.

By the end of the class, participants will have learned some new techniques and will have begun a small photo project

About the Instructor

Doreen Maller Doreen learned to sew as a young child with the help and guidance of the 'ladies on the block.” During the pandemic, she moved away from rigid and traditional samplers into a more expressive form of embroidery by layering the stitches into vintage and modern photographs. Doreen trained originally in Costume Design and spent many years in the Apparel Trade before she became an Expressive Arts Therapist and now, a Fine Artist.

Doreen says “A few basic stitches and some imagination can take the sewer into a new realm - a kind of creative meditation - what a joy it is to sew again.”
