Two-Day Online Workshop, Three Hours Per Day

How do ordinary people with busy lives leverage our actions in support of liberation, justice, and authentic connection? How can activists and social change-makers avoid burning out? How does the body factor into what our social movements might miss? Instead of thinking about social justice as a process that starts with changing people's minds, social worker, somatic movement therapist, and scholar/activist Rae Johnson asks us to understand our bodies—how we feel in them and relate to others through them—as the sites of transformation.

Join Rae for an immersive, experiential workshop delving into the transformative principles and practices of embodied activism. Rae guides participants to explore some key intersections of somatics and activism, discovering how embodiment practices can catalyze effective and sustainable social change.

Over the course of the weekend, workshop participants engage in a variety of experiential activities, ranging from movement exercises to guided reflections, each designed to illuminate the profound connection between our physical selves and our capacity to effect social change. Learn how to draw on the body’s capacity to cultivate empathy and authenticity while navigating issues of power, privilege, and difference and develop practical strategies for integrating embodied activism into your daily life.

Whether you're new to embodied practices or a seasoned activist seeking fresh inspiration, this workshop provides a nurturing space to deepen your understanding of embodied activism and cultivate tangible strategies for transformative action. Join us as we embark on a journey of self-discovery and mutual empowerment, harnessing the power of our bodies to create a more just and equitable world.

RAE JOHNSON, PhD, RSW, RSMT, BCC (they/them) is a board-certified coach, somatic movement therapist, and scholar/activist working at the intersections of embodiment and social justice. Currently a professor of somatic psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies, Rae has held leadership roles in several somatic psychology graduate programs over the past two decades. More recently, they played a key role in developing the first Embodied Social Justice Certificate, an online program that brought together hundreds of thought leaders, practitioners, and community change agents to help shape the emerging field of embodied social justice. Rae is the author of several books, including Embodied Social Justice (Routledge, 2018, 2022) and Embodied Activism (North Atlantic Books, 2023).
