This workshop delves into the legitimacy of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as an intelligent and educated form of communication that reflects language diversity. Linguistics acknowledges AAVE as a distinct dialect with its own grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, serving as a cultural identifier within black American communities. It sheds light on how AAVE has been unjustly criticized by racist attitudes, which not only perpetuate marginalization but also exploit the dialect for profit, as it has become prevalent in mainstream pop culture and media both in the US and internationally. By exploring AAVE's linguistic and cultural aspects, the workshop seeks to promote understanding, respect, and appreciation for this important aspect of linguistic diversity.
