Elementary Science Symposium

The Math & Science Collaborative is an AIU program that brings innovative and effective approaches to build a cohesive K-12 STEM curriculum that meets the rigor of the PA Core. Through our contracted training services, we help educators across Allegheny County and surrounding regions implement high leverage practices in the classroom to prepare students for tomorrow's careers. We also provide mathematics and science curriculum audits and alignment services. We provide professional development in effective pedagogical practices that engage all students in rigorous STEM learning through developing teacher leadership, implementing professional learning communities, utilizing lesson study, and customized support in content and pedagogical content knowledge.

You know  kids learn science best by engaging in the subject from an early age, but how do we find  time, and how do we teach it these days?

Science and engineering education is undergoing a transformation (Kober et al, 2023). We all know that children learn science best by engaging in the subject from an early age in the way that scientists and engineers do, but...<ul><li>How can we find the time to teach science consistently and in a phenomenon-based, three-dimensional way in K through 5?</li><li>What does it look and sound like in an elementary science classroom these days?</li><li>How can we possible teach all the math and ELA we have to teach and still find time for science?</li><li>There are environmental literacy standards now, too?! What?</li></ul>If you've asked yourself any of those questions (or others about elementary science) since the release of the PA STEELS (Science, Technology &amp; Engineering, Environmental Literacy &amp; Sustainability) standards in July, 2022, then you can benefit from joining the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Math &amp; Science Collaborative at the Elementary Science Symposium. Keynote address

Dr. Carla Zembal-Saul will provide the Keynote Address at the Elementary Science Symposium.  Carla is a Professor of Education in Science Education and holds the Kahn-endowed professorship in STEM education. Her research investigates the development of teaching practices that support K-6 children's participation in authentic scientific discourse and practices. Zembal-Saul has been involved in school-university partnership work for most of her career, and her research takes place in this context. In addition, she has experience serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (2001-2004), Science Education (2009-present), and the International Journal of Science Education (1998-present). Zembal-Saul was elected to the Executive Board of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) (2007-2010) and chaired the organization's Publications Advisory Board (2008-2010).

Keynote Address

Breakout Sessions

Following the Keynote Address by Dr. Zembal-Saul, participants will have the opportunity to choose breakout sessions to attend.  Breakout sessions are organized into four different strands or foci:  Finding Time for Science in Elementary;  Immersive Science-Learning Experiences;  Teacher Classroom Experiences with Teaching in a Phenomenon-based 3D Manner; and Integrating Other Content Standards with Science.  Participants will attend three breakout sessions of their choosing.  (You do NOT have to attend sessions in only one strand or area of focus.  You can mix and match.)  Lunch will be provided between the second and third breakout session.

Closing Session

During the closing session, participants will converse with colleagues using guiding questions and formats that will be provided.  The goal of the discussion this afternoon is for each individual (each elementary school, and each school district) to walk away with the beginning of a plan for how we will move forward with teaching elementary science from Kindergarten through grade 5!
