About this event

Do you enjoy the outdoors? Love riding your bike, supporting food justice and the environment at the same time? Sign up to deliver farm boxes on the first Saturday of every month for Veggielution’s Eastside Connect program.

Our food system doesn’t serve all communities, but it should.

In March 2020, Veggielution launched Eastside Connect, a program through which we distribute fresh produce to low-income East San José residents who are experiencing the brunt of the COVID-19-related shutdowns. While Eastside Connect was initially launched as a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has quickly become a central strategy for us to connect people from diverse backgrounds through food and farming.

Beginning in 2021, Veggielution grew the capacity of Eastside Connect by adding bike delivery, food safety certification, and value added products prepared by local residents, in order to help build a more innovative and climate-resilient local food system (growing, processing, and distributing Veggielution produce).

In partnership with Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, we created a volunteer program to deliver farm boxes. Switching to bike delivery helps reduce carbon emissions from the use of our farm truck. It is also an opportunity to engage with new community members and encourage them to learn more about Veggielution, Emma Prusch Farm Park, and the surrounding neighborhoods of East San José.

Now, almost 4 years later, Veggielution’s Eastside Connect program serves more than 300 families per week (and growing) through farm boxes and our onsite farm stand. We currently partner with Food Connect to use the On Fleet app to help us create routes for bike delivery and helps us communicate to our recipients. You can be a part of this project too by helping us deliver the boxes by bike!

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to volunteer?

Just yourself, your bike, and a desire to get out there and help your community! (And a helmet of course!)

Do I need to ride my bike to Veggielution?

You can if you would like (we encourage it if you can!), we also have parking onsite if it is easier to drive here and unload your bikes to head out for delivery.

How will I get my route?

We use an app called On Fleet to onboard all bike volunteers. With the help of Food Connect, they create routes and assign them to each volunteer's app, where you'll be able to see where you are delivering, and the route to get to each drop-off.
