Easeful Embodiment Workshop

Hula is the art of Hawaiian dance expressing all that we see, hear, taste, touch, and feel.It is the main practice at Halau i Ka Pono, our hula school. Halau translates as “meeting house or place of learning,” and i Ka Pono means “of goodness, well-being, righteousness.”  Another way to say this is “place to cultivate the goodness.”  The purpose is to teach indigenous Hawaiian culture and stories through the joy of dance.Hula and healing go hand in hand.  The dance is a wonderful way to strengthen and get energy moving in the core muscles of the body.  It connects us to the grounding energy of the earth and opens us to the warm spirit of Aloha.  There are elements of mindful centering, flowing and breath-work involved in this Native Hawaiian dance form.   All ages can benefit.

Ease into embodiment with this Mindfulness Meditation and Hula-focused workshop led by Zen priest/teacher and Kumu Hula June Tanoue

Mindfulness isn’t just about the mind. It’s also a practice of bringing our awareness back to the body, and finding a deeper presence in our physical form.Ease into embodiment with this Zen and Hula-focused workshop led by June Ryushin Kaililani Tanoue, a Zen priest and teacher in the White Plum lineage and a Master Teacher of Hawaiian Hula. The cultural dance of hula, known as the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people, is seen as an embodiment of nature. The dancer becomes the motion of the wind through the trees, the waves on the shore, the life-giving rains, and the fragrance of flowers. Hula portrays this rich spiritual interdependence through mindful movement of hands, feet, and body. In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll explore a range of gentle movement and breath awareness practices—drawn from both the Zen and hula traditions—to help you experience the integration of meditation and dance.You&#x27;ll also learn a gentle hula honoring the harmony of body and mind. Online and In-person Workshop includes:<ul><li>Mindfulness meditation instruction and practice </li><li>Gentle warm up exercises to prepare your body for Hula</li><li>Hula instruction</li><li>Brief writing practice</li></ul>This workshop is open to all levels and abilities. You may also bring a cushion if you prefer sitting on the floor for meditation. </li><li>Dress comfortably ready for movement. She began studying Hula in 1988 with Kumu Michael Pili Pang and went through a traditional ’uniki ritual graduating as Kumu Hula in June 2000. She began teaching in 2003 and founded <a href="https://halauikapono.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Halau i Ka Pono, the Hula School of Chicago </a>in September 2009. The Hula School is a non-denominational program of the Zen Life &amp; Meditation Center, Chicago. She is also co-founder of Zen Life &amp; Meditation Center, Chicago with her husband, Roshi Robert Joshin Althouse, has been practicing Zen since 1993 and is a fully empowered Zen Teacher (Sensei) and a Zen Buddhist Priest. She was born and raised on Hawaii Island and is sansei on her father&#x27;s side and yonsei on her mother&#x27;s side of the family.
