Supporting early literacy as a coach requires two distinct skill sets. First, coaches need to know early literacy content and best practices well. Second, coaches need to know effective moves to build meaningful partnerships with the classroom teachers they support. By leveraging both content knowledge and coaching dispositions, coaches have the power to support impactful change in K-2 classrooms.
This cadre will provide coaches with a strong understanding of early literacy teaching and learning. We will explore what research says about how students learn to read and consider the instructional shifts classrooms need to put the research into practice.
This cadre will also provide coaches with practice with the behaviors and dispositions needed to develop effective partnerships with teachers. Coaches will learn strategies to effectively communicate with teachers in ways that build teacher efficacy and instructional capacity. We will learn to listen well and to ask the right questions as we support all teachers to best meet the needs of our K-2 students.
Who Should Attend:
This cadre is designed for instructional coaches, K-2 teacher leaders, administrators, special education teachers, and anyone else who supports K-2 literacy in their school or district.
What to Expect:
In this workshop, we will:
- examine skills through the lenses of (1) what students will learn how to do and (2) what students need to know to be ready for this new learning
- strategies to uncover what students already know
- language and methods we can use to build on student knowledge and advance them to new learning
