In the early 2000s there was a burst of energy out of the San Francisco Bay Area that launched
what has come to be known as the Maker Movement. In the years that followed, educators,
innovators, and makers have come together to figure out how to harness the power of
making to support learners.

Pioneering this movement,  Young Innovators Academy and the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County recently launched the Empowering Communities to Shape their Worlds through Maker-Centered Learning initiative. The goal of this program is to equip early childhood educators and parents  with tools.

But what is making? And how do the practices and processes associated with making support learning across the grade levels? In response to these questions, a host of research projects have been launched at Project Zero under the banner of Agency by Design—a multi-year research study at Harvard.

During this interactive workshop, educators from the Empowering Communities to Shape their
Worlds through Maker-Centered Learning initiative will introduce parents to the
Agency by Design framework  with an emphasis on how the framework has been adapted and applied in our school.

The session will provide parents and caregivers with tools and strategies that they can use at home to engage their children in maker-centered learning.
