About this event

Forage for your dye from nature, grow some in your garden, or grab from your kitchen!

In this class discuss why we need to properly prep own fabrics, use natural materials to get lasting colors, and how to use modifiers to change shades or fix your work. Even some shibori and bundle dyeing.

Each student dyes 3 items, to learn how to bundle dye, stove top, and color change (modify).

1st item will be dyed and painted with modifiers.

2nd item is shibori bundled and dyed in tannin and color bath, and then modified.

3rd item is bundle dyed using many colors.

Leave knowing how to start your own dye journal, store your dye baths to get the most out of your foraged materials, and where to source materials from earth conscious companies.

All materials will be provided, but students welcome to bring smaller all natural articles that are prewashed in pH balanced soap. (More info with sign up, know you may not get long lasting color when you bring your own items)

(In this class we do not have the time prep or mordant yourselves. If interested in the full experience, you must sign up for 4 session "World of Natural Dyes" or you can sign up for a private mordanting class.)

"Better Than Jam" is the textile printing and fashion line of owner Karin Persan, since 2007. The newest space, post Covid, of the same name is now at 10 Grattan Street. There is a small showroom with remnants of the boutique that ran 10+ years that hosted handmade creations of local designers. However the space now is mainly the large private studio of the creator, where screenprinting and textile dyeing occurs. You will be welcomed into the artist's creation space! A little different for returning students but still great and lucky to have.
