An evening showcasing the duality of two Indian Classical Dance styles

“DVIDHA: an evening showcasing the duality of two Indian Classical Dance styles” is a double-bill program focused on contextualizing traditional Indian dance forms for diverse audiences and experiences. Dvidha is a Sanskrit word which literally means “duality”. The evening will feature the styles of Bharatanatyam and Kathak – two distinct forms sharing Indian aesthetics – presented by Cambridge-local artists Swathi Jaisankar and Ariaki Dandawate. Jaisankar will present Bharatanatyam which originates from South India and will showcase her mastery of intricate nritta or rhythmic footwork executed primarily in the araimandi or half sitting position, as well as nuanced eye and neck movements with the use of mudras or hand gestures for storytelling. By contrast, Dandawate will display Kathak, originating from North India, and will demonstrate expertise through complex tatkaar or footwork, dazzling chakris or pirouettes, and graceful ang (torso) and kalai (wrist) movements from a standing posture.Throughout the evening the artists will use an interactive format to showcase the individual beauty of their respective dance styles but also explore the similarities and differences between them. They will seamlessly transition between the two dance forms, showcasing the fluidity and versatility of Indian classical dance. Dandawate and Jaisankar will weave together traditional and original repertoire, allowing the audience to witness the contrast in movements, emotional themes, and rhythmic complexities, as well as gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for both Kathak and Bharatanatyam. The harmonious confluence of styles, the artistic synergy between the dancers, and the richness of repertoire are sure to make the DVIDHA a spellbinding experience for audiences.

V﻿enue Information:The Multicultural Arts Center is located at 41 Second Street in Cambridge, MA. Please enter at the ground floor entrance and visit the Box Office on your right as you enter.O﻿nce you check in, you will head upstairs to the theater. There is an elevator and staircase for access to the theater.Seating is general admission. The house will open an hour before the show starts, so you are welcome to arrive early. Feel free to visit our gallery before the show begins.Getting There:The Multicultural Arts Center is located just a few blocks from the Green line Lechmere MBTA Station.The East Cambridge Parking Garage is entered off Spring Street, between First &amp; Second Streets, one block away from us, and open 24/7.
