Two institutions, three trees, twelve makers…The d.Tree Studio is a collaboration between the Charles H. Wright Museum and Collage for Creative Studies, Detroit, that brings together creative inquiry, craft, sustainability, and community vision and storytelling.This experimental studio curriculum has been two years in the making, designed by both institutions to explore how designers and artists can learn from the wisdom of trees through the lens of African material culture, and African American experiences in Detroit.In 2018, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History noticed dead and dying Zelkova trees on their campus. In 2019, as part of its mission to be a zero waste institution, the museum formed a collaboration with the College for Creative Studies to use the timber harvested in a creative endeavor, questioning how can two neighbors, a museum and an art school, set a precedent for climate justice art.This has culminated in a 15-week studio class with 12 new and emerging artists making narrative pieces in Zelkova wood that will be shown in the Center Galleries at CCS (housed in what used to be the Wright Museum), 19 March – 2 April.
