Salix:

Hensci, Salix cvhocefkvtos! Hello, my name is Salix!

I am Muscogee/Cherokee, and white. I'm a queer 'two spirit' artist, and not an Elder, but totally an 'elder millennial' lol. I moved to Cheyenne/Arapaho/Ute country (Denver) Aug. 2022 from Kiowa territory and the homelands of many nations, Norman, OK.

I learned how to do Cherokee-style basket weaving in Norman in 2017 from Kathy Haney (Seminole, Muscogee, Shawnee, Delaware, Kickapoo), and I'd really love to share it with you. Weaving is one of my favorite ways to be mindful and centered in community.

I have a BFA in Studio Art from the University of OK, an MSW from the University of Pittsburgh, and I'm currently attending Iliff School of Theology.

Frequently asked questions

How are classes structured?

I cap classes at 10 people so that I can give everyone individual attention. Starting a basket is the hardest part, so I demo how for the whole class, then I go around and show people one at a time. It requires some patience at the beginning, but then it's usually smooth sailing.

How long are classes?

Classes are 2.5-3 hrs because I like to have the time to take our time. You are free to come late, take breaks, and/or leave early.

Are materials included?

All materials included. I teach my classes using 1.75mm/#2 commercial round reed, and sometimes I have flat reed available. You can bring your own stuff to weave, and I can't guarantee I'll know how to work with every material, but we can try!

Will any of the reed be dyed?

Most likely! If you want a specific color, let me know about a week beforehand.

Where can I buy my own reed? Amazon?

Reed from Amazon might be shipped faster, but it has unreliable quality. I would recommend 1.) https://www.caneandbasket.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=55 and 2.) https://oakridgestores.com/crafts/traditional-crafts/basketry/commonwealth-basket-round-reed-2-1-75mm-1lb-coil-approximately-1-100-2rr/
