DRIFTS

DRIFTS

Washington BathsPortland, ME
Overview

A new short film by Peter Coccoma, with original music by Elori Saxl.

Join us for a screening of DRIFTS, a new short film by filmmaker PETER COCCOMA. The evening will open with a live performance by the film’s composer ELORI SAXL playing a set of all new music inspired by the film score.

A Q/A with film programmer Xander Moffat and the director will follow the screening.

Set between Acadia National Park and NYC, this subtle film traces the impact of a father and son’s chance encounter on a camping trip with a photographer struggling with midlife ennui. Featuring a deeply interior lead performance by Erin Neufer (Netflix’s Sirens, Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, HBO’s Julia) an otherworldly score by experimental composer Elori Saxl, and evocative cinematography by Maine-born DP Taylor McIntosh, DRIFTS is a uniquely transportive cinematic experience about our search for presence in a culture that is pulling us everywhere else.

PETER COCCOMA is a filmmaker and experimental composer. His debut solo album for electronics and strings, A Place To Begin, was featured as one of NPR’s Best Albums of 2022. Since then he has released a series of three short films: an experimental short, JEANO, released with Smithsonian Folkways; a narrative short, GIRO PREPARES FOR DEATH; and now DRIFTS. His films deal with similar themes about how our experience of life is shaped by our attunement to our sense and the emotional and psychological effects on that awareness.

ELORI SAXL is an experimental electronic composer. Her debut album THE BLUE OF DISTANCE (Western Vinyl, 2021l) received critical acclaim for its elegant combination of digitally-processed recordings of wind and water with the rich sounds of analog synthesizers and chamber orchestra. Her follow up EP, DRIFTS AND SURFACES, as well as her string of FILM SCORES have continued her reputation as a forward thinking electronic producer. Her most recent collaboration with saxophonist Henry Salomon SEEING IS FORGETTING (True Panther, 2026) has been described as “a torch of minimalism fused with an electronic sensibility informed by soundsystem culture and modern pop production.”
