Join us for an event featuring scholar and comics creator, Julia Alekseyeva. She will share about her professional trajectory in academia and in comics, and will facilitate a comics workshop.
Dr. Julia Alekseyeva is an assistant professor of English and Cinema & Media Studies at UPenn. She is the author of the recently published Antifascism and the Avant-Garde: Radical Documentary in the 1960s (UC Press, 2025), an academic book that views the experimental form of French and Japanese nonfiction films in relation to leftist movements. She is also an author-illustrator and published the award-winning nonfiction graphic novel Soviet Daughter: A Graphic Revolution (Microcosm, 2017), as well as shorter graphic essays on themes ranging from linguistic code-switching to global 1968 protest movements to Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion.
